The service area has changed much over the years. It was originally called Anderton, then Rivington and now Bolton West. It was the site of a Peter Kay Mockumentary and made it into the news after a couple, who wished to get married above a motorway, chose this as their spot in the 1990s. The service area itself has changed hands a number of times having been owned by Kenning Motor Group, Rank, Pavilion, Granada and now First. Was modernised in 1992 by Pavilion and has not changed much since. Bolton West is now set to be demolished and re-built. Moto is also trying to buy First Group just now, and it's thought that the terms of the sale will mean that Moto gets to keep Magor and the A40 truckstop, so long as it sells Bolton West back to the former First Group shareholders.
