Originally opened by the Rank Group, who were then taken over by Pavilion, then Granada and now trade as Moto. The services were originally called Aust, and were opened in the days before the new Severn Crossing, when the M48 was still the route of the M4. At this time the services were housed in a much larger building closer to the river, giving fantastic views of the Severn, and of the bridge. The self service restaurant also had one of the largest seating capacities of any MSA on the network. When the new Severn Crossing opened in the late 1990s, this part of the M4 became the M48 and it was felt that traffic levels would fall away too much to support such large services. The main building was then sold to a software firm and a new, smaller services builkding was built closer to the car park, which is the way it remains today. I heard, via another MSA website, that the original plan had been to close the site altogether but as custom has still remained steady, Severn View has stayed open. Apparently, for those still wishing to get the view of the Severn, there is an access road along the side of the site that takes you there.
