Best Motorway Service Area 2007
Once again, the title of Best Motorway Service Area goes to Tebay North, the only site to get a five out of five burger ranking for the year. Some of the comments about this site include:
"Good food, nice shop and pleasant staff all make it feel more than just a functional stop"
"the staff seem to care"
"food always good and reasonable, nice atmosphere and good staff"
Runners Up
Honourable mentions also go to six service areas which achieved a burger rating of 4/5:
"always spot on for customer service"
"Good parking and showers"
"toilets are fantastic and very modern"
"excellent selection of hot and cold food"
"food was exceptional for a service station"
"Pleasant place to have dinner and was very clean"
Best Motorway Service Operators 2007
This category is split into two, as smaller operators tend to have the advantage over larger ones as a more individualistic and less branded experience is generally perceived as positive by visitors. A "large" operator is defined as one with ten or more sites.
Best Large Operator 2007
RoadChef managed the best rating of the "big three" operators, with an overall rating of 3/5 burgers.
Best Small Operator 2007
Westmorland Motorway Services again left the rest trailing, with an overall rating of 5/5 burgers.
Worst Motorway Service Areas 2007
Although some sites did do well enough to be commended, the overall picture for 2007 was, again, considerably more bleak. Out of 85 rated areas, 17 scored 3/5 on the burger rating, 35 scored 2/5 burgers and 24 only scored 1/5 burgers. The wooden spoon, though, goes to the two areas that scored a truly pitiful 0/5:
"a disgrace to the public""dilapidated and intimidating"
"most of the facilities out of order""the smell was over powering"
