Stopped here a few weeks back, WHSmith and Burger King staff friendly, and the food I purchased was up to par. The toilets were also satisfactory.

Both times I've stopped. Here have been very pleasant. The staff are very chatty and helpful. They smile :) which makes a change . The toilets here were clean and smelt fresh, good cleaners. I would stop here again when in Cardiff next.

Never again! Stopped yesterday at this horrible dilapidated services because we wanted a Costa coffee. As we regularly go to other Costas, we expected the usual excellent response. Not so. After waiting far too long when only one other customer was ahead in the queue, I was eventually served. Having given my order ( of 2 coffees and a hot water) and paid, the next stage was excruciating. The instructions had to repeated several times to her colleague who ended up giving me a small cappucino instead of a medium. I then had to wait another lengthy period of time before the correct size was made together with my request for a cinnamon topping. I was told that the tray would be brought over to me. It wasn't. No sooner was it made than the barista disappeared from behind the counter and through a side door. Our coffees were just abandoned. So I collected the tray myself and quickly noted that the cinnamon was old, dusty and had simply gone off. I asked for another cup but things were no better the next time (the cinnamon was awful and the coffee was weak and tasteless)....so I gave up and asked for a refund. To add insult to injury for this lack of quality and service, this Costa charges 50% more than other non-motorway restaurants. Thank Goodness for my local Costas!

Following on from the negative comments : There are planned maintenance works on the toilets at these services. The contractors were supposed to have finished works on the toilet areas at the end of May ...However the parts and fittings they ordered were incorrect and this has delayed the process.
These works are planned and will be completed in the near future.

We travel frequently with Edwards Coaches which stop at Cardiff West to pick up or off load passengers. I use the ladies toilet each time out of necessity and they are always dirty and not maintained. The worst thing of all is that many of the cubicle doors have part of their locks missing or all of the lock missing. There is human excrement left in the toilets from some time before and the whole area could do with a face lift. My husband also wishes to comment the gents is very dilapidated. This is not a very good impression to show visitors to Wales as well as locals like us. The time written below does not really matter as they are poor whatever time we visit.

Interviewed a client at this service area, unable to find a clean table, every table was filthy with leftover food and rubbish. used the toilet, the stench of urine was overpowering. What a filthy dump. Avoid at all costs!

I recently visited the service station on my way home from a long night at work. As driving i felt slightly tired and decided that it would be a good idea to take a break from the road and grab a caffine fix. When entering the building I used the wash room facilities and to my surprise they were very clean and maintained. As I walked to the costa station there didn't appear to be anyone available so i looked around amd saw a young lady cleaning the dining area, "are you open?" I aske. "Yes course, i'll come and serve you right now" she replied. I placed my order which was a large latte with an extra shot and a ham and cheese toastie. The barista was very polite, chatty and helpful and the coffee was outstanding. While serving me the barista was questioning my order to ensure that it was just how i like it. During the cooking time if the toastie the young lady made conversation with me and showed interest in my replies, (Abbie I think she said her name was) paid great attention to detail in her drink making. I haven't recieved such good and positive customer service from the younger generation. It was a real pleasure to be served within experience such a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Although the prices are slightly pricey, you get what you pay for and it was worth every penny. Refreshing coffee and mouth watering toasties, all served by a polite helpful customer service assistant.Next time I am passing though the area I will definitely be paying another trip to costa coffee. I highly recommend Cardiff West to anyone who is lookingnfor convience and quality.

I visited this service station on my way back from Berkshire. I didnt use the facilities so cant comment on those.I did however fill up with petrol. I can honestly say I have never experienced such rudeness from a member of staff.I wanted to pay for my petrol and a coffee together, when I asked to that I was told my the friendly till operator yes, no problem, I will call Sam. Out came Sam from the back, clearly not impressed by having to serve me a capaccino. Her attitude was that of contempt. When she asked if I needed a vat receipt i decided I would bring myself to her level and not add a "please" when answering if I needed a receipt. I couldn't believe that she responded by saying "PLEASE" in a most threatening way. I told her that her attitude had offended me and the response was to put her face right up to mine and deny that she had been off hand.I honestly felt quite threatened by her behaviour, I have never experienced anything like it. I am sure this cant be the first complaint made against this member of staff. She really does have an attitude problem.

I use this place often, because I find the fuel prices really reasonable. I admit the toilets are a pretty grim place, but they serve their purpose I suppose. I've always found the staff there good and the place clean and tidy. There's no real restaurant there, but that doesn't bother me. I never eat at service stations EVER!. The whole place serves it's purpose, somewhere to splash and dash!

I wanted a coffee but I was alone and had my small dog with me which I cant leave in the car so I carried the dog into the service area and was met by a young lady who very politely informad me I could not take my little dog inside to purchase a coffee and quite rightly so,I left the area I then tried to tie the dog to a pipe and went inside but my little dog was attracting a lot of attention and I was worried he might be taken?? so I went outside to untie him and go back to my car coffeeless? Then to my surprise a young man who introduced himself as the manager from Costa Coffee [I think his name was Grant] believed to my suprise I wanted a coffee he went and got me my coffee while I stayed with my dog what a wonderful gesture and to me I can only say that at my age this has got to be the best service I have ever received for a very long time well done Grant and the young lady

Oh boy, travelling the length of the country as I do I can confirm this place is the worst service area I've ever been to.
The warning sign was a litter strewn car park (with items so large in the road you had to drive around them). Once you got inside ceiling tiles were missing, areas were cordoned off with hazard tape and service trolleys were abandoned in the foyer. Your food options are a burger from BK or whatever sandwiches Costa have. There's no traditional cafe.
The Burger King area was "well worn". I could smell the toilets before I could even see the sign for them and they were grotty, nasty and had a whole row of taps cordoned off with more hazard tape.
If you want to experience what life might be like in a post apocalyptic nuclear winter, go to Cardiff West Services. If not then just avoid at all costs!

*WARNING: A cautionary tale*
"£1 a minute innit"
Nothing exceptional really struck me about these services...until a few weeks after my visit when i received a letter...
...it was a CHARGE NOTICE notifying me of the fact that I was required to pay £80 within 28 days, if not, I would be charged a further £40 'administration' fee.
Of course, I was at the services at the times stated (photographic evidence included! Nice touch!!)...although, even in spite of the apparently "clearly and prominently displayed (Terms and Conditions)" I was unaware that it was a pay-to-park services and that there was a Zero-tolerance two-hour free parking limit...not anymore.
The parking association very generously offered to accept a reduced sum of £50 if paid within 14 days (which, under duress, I paid). This meant that for the extra 51 mins that I was spending money and using the facilities at the services...I was paying the equivalent of almost £1 per minute for the pleasure.
"Visit Cardiff West and don't delay......or £120 you could pay!!"

I am very angry with the service I recieved recently at Cardiff West Services. One girl was serving in Costa and I waited around just under 10 minutes to eventually be served because a woman who was in the front of the queue's problem. Her costa card didnt work and she wouldnt leave until it would, so the girl behind the counter kept trying but nothing was happening. The barista then walked off to find someone to help her with the card. She came back and said there was no-one around but the customer wasnt having it. Then someone appeared called Eliott, and he managed to validate the costa card. The barista then served the man infront of me, and eventually she served me. She took my money before she made the drink, and then went away to make it. There wasnt enough of the juice left so she had to leave the counter again. Not once did she apologize about the long wait and the fact she kept leaving to get stuff. Then to add to everything AFTER I had paid, Elliott turned to me and said 'yeah that will be £3.09 for yours alright', to which i didnt reply because i simply thought he wasnt directing that me as id already paid. Then the barista handed me the drink and as i was walking off, the barista and elliott shouted across the service station to simply say 'have you paid for your drink?', i was so embarassed because there were people looking and i replied by saying 'yes you just served me'. The lack of good customer service is disgusting and as I work in a service station not far down the motorway i know exactly how you treat customers and this was not it. I wanted to inform you of the service i recieved and hope it doesnt happen to other customers.

Dosser is sorely mistaken if he thinks that everybody who works in these places thinks the fines are ok, the prices are ok, everything is clean and perfect. I work in one of these establishments, I think the prices are appalling, with the fines you can go and get yourselves logged into the places parking computer as a visitor if you've broken down, everywhere is so understaffed that it's not possible to clean and stock up everything. In the MSA I work in, there's one person in the shop all day; that person is supposed to do night shifts work if they haven't done anything (which is often), all of the paperwork, all of the stocking up, cleaning, temperatures, deal with deliveries, clean and fix the coffee machine, and serve customers. As well as dealing with constant abuse from customers who think we set the prices. Management will not put on more workers either, so the unstaffing issue is not our fault. It's no good telling us to 'vote with our feet and walk out' because with the current economic crisis it's impossible to get a different job in my area - I hunt online every day for something to come up, go to the job centres twice a week. It's difficult because they want certain qualifications which I don't have despite being a straight A student with 11 GCSE's, 4 A-Levels, can speak 3 languages - or they want us to be full time which most of us can't do because we're either college students or university students.

I would just like to say that I stopped in these services the other evening for a costa coffee where I was served by a young man who I believe was called Grant. He was very friendly and helpful as I was looking to go to a particular place near Cardiff and he helped me with directions. So Thank You
Katrin Ames, Tue 19 Apr 2011
I could and have played the slot/arcade machines for more than two hours so there you go. as a customer buying drinks and playing the machines spending money gives me a right to be there so parking fees should not come into it,Anyway all the sinage is a waste of time as they are not enforcable, its the bully boy practise to extorte money out of people that upsets, as thats all its is bully boy thugs. Clearly you are associated with these companys in a way other wise you would not be in favour of this highway robbery
Dosser666, Fri 4 Feb 2011
People who complain about the £80 fine are short sighted. There are warnings littered all over the place telling you about the parking plus how can you stay in one building for two hours without achieving something!?

Hey Mrs Thomas before you appeal please do some research and read some of the comments on here. There is some doubt on the validaty of these demands and possibly not legal so please do your research before you make contact as many sites do say ignore them. try www.pepipoo.com for more advise.

The people that work in J33 service station all were generally rude and glum apart from a young gentleman called Craig as i recall who was very polite and a breath of fresh air. If all employees were like this young young chap it would be for the better

One of the best service stations have ever fuelled up at. The shop was clean, tidy, loads to choose from with some really good offers. Fuel was well priced too. Excellent facility and would stop again and again. Well done!

As a courier we have to sometimes go to the dreaded motorway rip off area known as "the motorway services". I hasten to add not for the food... but fuel. I was on my way to Bonny Scotland from Essex and then Liverpool finally Falkirk & Aberdeen.. (yes we get about..!) Only to have a well needed rest and a bite to eat at Moto services.. YUK.. But I was nearly out of fuel, spent £77 filling my van up,(cos their fuel is much more expensive that anywhere else?? even though it's easier for the tankers to get to them with the motorway network??????) spent £19 odd getting fuel for me including drinks etc, went back to my van and fell akip for an hour, or so I thought.(was three) Drove to Scotland delivered no problem, drove home. (knackered..!) couple of weeks later get a parking fine from Moto services saying i'd gone over the time limit....Now up to about £120 cos van is rented and took longer to reach me.... I work for the largest independant courier company in the south east and all the drivers will boycott Moto services from now on. haven't paid the "so called fine" (the robbing) so lets see what they want to do.. I will go to court and fight this monopoly of robbing scaremongering so called "Services" The only people they serve are themselves with the amount of mark up they put on normal everyday items. This country has become a disgrace to allow these racketeers to stay in business..

Well it was frankly good. What a nice bunch of people. A great On The Run shop at the petrol station with a multitude of cuddly toys. (I'd advise a sit down at their cafe area, kick back and be smug with the fact you're not as depressed as the people working there). The carpets at the travel lodge remind me of a by gone era, though the walls gleam hope for a bright future. The receptionist brought me up a cup in the night on request, which was comforting as I didn't fancy washing the cups I had previously used to drink other drinks. I would return voluntarily.

Ive oftern used these services, and they have been dirty and most oftern or not very wiffy. Their taps are always broken, and when they do work the water is cold. The hand dryer also blows out freezing cold air.
