Tell us all about your experiences of this service area.
I called briefly at this Services for a natural purpose, and went in the petrol station building. This has to be the most disgusting, smelly and dirty facility I have used in the last quarter of a century. Compare the same in Switzerland recently when I went into the lorry-drivers' toilet, and I could have eaten my lunch off the floor.

Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry to hear that you had a bad experience on your visit to Roadchef Maidstone.
All MSA's in the UK have charged those parking for longer than 2 hours for many decades, something which is in line with recommendations from the Highways Agency. These charges are in place to ensure that we can fulfil our legal obligation as a short term rest stop and to stop people from using our facilities as long term car parks. The average time spent at a service area is between 20 and 30 minutes, so the 2 hour limit is more than adequate for the vast majority of our customers.
We feel that our signage is extensive, with signs visible at the entrance and exit to our sites, as well as throughout the car parks and in the main facilities buildings.
On this occasion, if you were attending a broken down vehicle, then someone from our site team would have been more than happy to exclude your vehicle from our parking charge system.
If you could send your PCN number, along with information regarding the circumstances surrounding your visit to email@example.com we will be more than happy to investigate this matter further for you.
The Roadchef Team.

They should raze this Service to the ground! I get a ticket for repairing a truck there! There were no signs, no information, nothing! No room for lorries to. Scums!

I stopped in your services today I was towing a caravan so I followed signs for caravans very clear but when I arrived at designated area it was full but not with caravans there was 1car towing a trailer 1 motorhome 1 car being repaired by Rac van the rest of the spaces were taken by commercial vans or just solo cars I had to drive straight out without eating drinking or using toilets very disappointed have noticed in other service areas all over UK there are signs warning non caravannersto keep out of designated caravan parking area which I think is a very good idea hope this message does not fall on deaf ears Thanks
GRAHAM KIRKIN, Thu 16 Oct 2014
Arrived here today at 8.50 a.m. in a Motorhome hoping to get something for breakfast before continuing our journey to Yorkshire. Went to the caravans parking area to park but was unable to do so primarily due to two vans taking up FOUR parking bays. The occupants were in the process of loading/unloading boxes and items of furniture from one van to the other. There were no other available parking spaces. Continued our journey and was unable to stop until the service area on the M11.Will NEVER attempt to stop at this service area again. Perhaps the owners should police this parking area as vigilantly as they police the HGV parking area and STOP this type of thing happening,

I drive between Dover (originating in France) and the North multiple times a year, and always pass through Maidstone services. I find that, whichever direction I’m heading in (whether north, usually between 21:00 and midnight, or south, usually between 18:00 and 19:00, where I will have already been on the road for around six hours at these points) it’s approximately the halfway point of my journey and perfect for a rest stop.
Although I don’t demand much in terms of facilities (only the basics; toilets, a coffee bar and maybe somewhere to get a quick snack), I am always impressed with the services available, particularly late at night when you would imagine only a ‘skeleton’ staff being on.
On top of this, it’s always clean and pleasant.
One concession (a funny story): on my last visit heading northwards, I visited the toilets as normal. When I entered, there was another young man, similar age to myself, also using the urinals. It became apparent, after a few moments, that he was ‘having a nice time’ while stood there, and not making any efforts to conceal it!! I had to laugh as I am not easily offended, but this was despite there being police on site (officers in the building, getting coffee, and two cars parked outside). It was the same on my return journey (a different person of course). I know this is not the fault of the operator but I did note that there was no attendant on duty, or at least they weren’t at their post. Had there been, this situation probably wouldn’t have arisen.
All in all though, excellent services.

I know it is very expensive to park at Maidstone services, We live 5 mins away and we rent out our drive way, so if you are looking for cheap and safe and secure parking whilst you go away on holiday and are being picked up from Maidstone services we can help.
You are more than welcome to park on our drive and can book it in advance online on the link below.
Eloise Seale, Thu 17 Apr 2014
This must be one of the smallest motorway service areain the UK and also the most expensive. £32.00 to park a lorry overnight is an absolete rip off. I have learnt my lesson though and will never stop here again!!
Trevor mathieson, Tue 8 Apr 2014
Absolutely disgusting. Just received a fine for £90 for parking there for two hours and forty-one minutes. There were no signs to be seen (although I'm sure there were a few hidden), no parking machines to alert you that you needed to pay and no sign as you went in saying there was a time limit. They are deliberately trying to get money out of you - they are trying to make sure you go over the time limit so they can squeeze every pound out of you. What's more, if you want to pay the fine there's a £1.50 surcharge on a credit AND debit card!!!!!!! Absolutely horrendous and disgusting fat cats. Never use Maidstone services. Pretentious and greedy.
Annie, Mon 23 Dec 2013
TERRIBLE, just received £90 ticket for staying there for 2h 35min... totall rip off!!! hate it, will NEVER stop there again!!!!!!!! BTW, sorry for spending my money at your services...!!!

The car parking area is a disgracful area of overflowing bins and cigarette butts. No external ash tray facilities, so no wonder people who smoke put cigarettes on the floor. "Maidstone Borough Council is dedicated to providing a Clean and Tidy Borough ". Suggestion, start cleaning the M20 car park area.
Hugh Bone, Tue 26 Mar 2013
In the opening times section, it states that service areas are to remain open 24 hours a day every day 365 days a year. I went there Christmas morning and they were closed. Lights off and no-one in the car park.
Daniel gill, Wed 26 Dec 2012
Interesting to read a similar complaint about PARKING FINES. I had the misfortune of having a heavy argument with my partner, (over 2 hours parked up in the car) Luckily it ended with a coffee at Costa, but I returned home to a £50 fine for 40minutes over the 2-hour limit. When I wrote a letter to explain why, in the naive hope that someone might understand I wasn't taking advantage of the facilities. I received a print-out anonymous reply from CP Plus. BEWARE! You are a cash cow and you will be fined for any time over the 2-hour limit...As this is the only services on the M20 between the M25 and the coast, it seems they feel they can do what they want re parking. Have I missed the point of services? They are there for drivers, to break their journey, to stop and refresh so as to be safe on the raod. Whether they be families, freight, business, or tourists. Why the 2-hour limit? Who would abuse parking there, and why? It's in the middle of no-where....Cynical, utterly cycnical.

Don't understand some of the comments on this service area. We stopped on our way to Dover at 7am for breakfast. The young lady who served us was a real little ray of sunshine! Extremely helpful and very pleasant, we will certainly be stopping here again.

to all domestic and foreign travelers never use maidstone services because they are out to rip you off, the police advise that if you are tierd and need a rest to pull in and have a sleep and refresh. That is just what we did on the 1st august at 2.30am we saw no signage stating that there was a time limit we used the services and brought coffie and food used the toilets and had a nap refreshed and went on our merry way. When we returned home we had been fined i tryed talking to debt recovery ltd all i got was a very rude women who just talked over me and it has cost me £120.it is a dissgrace that we are treated like this i am a safe and carefull driver, so the next time any one is in that area under no circumstances do not use maidstone services they are out to ripoff hard honest working folk.your services are a dissgrace and will not even give any response or feedback to our complaint.

Is there any chance that in the evenings the hgv's could park in there own parking spaces and not in the coach bays as you can never park in the bays with a coach when you have passengers on and this is making it very dangerous for passengers. If they could bring back clamping of said vehicles it would make it so much easier.
Stuart, Thu 8 Nov 2012
thankyou for having an area of parking for caravans.. problem is it is always full of vans or cars..do you think you could enforce this area the same as the services do in some of the lorry parks. several times this year we have had to move on as there is nowhere to park for our outfit.. we would have liked to stay and have lunch but this is not possible if this situation is not changed. hope you can help
pat, Sun 4 Nov 2012
on the 1st august we pulled in at night at maidstone services it was late at night and very dark as we had been travling form morecambe in the northwest,we did not notice any signage what so ever, we did not relaise there was a time limit ither, as we had been travling with our young kids and my disabled mum who has a blue badge, so we brought food and hot drinks and used the toilets and the kids let off some steam so we sat and chilled for a while before we resumed our journey. How ever when we came back from france we had a fine because we had over stayed our welcome!!!!! i have a shop and we do not fine people who are spending money and useing the aminities. It is a dissgrace that a familly who use the services are fined, the singage is not prominate so not easly seen. and the debt recovery that you debt recovery plus ltd are the rudest people that i have ever spoken too absaloute dissgrace.

It's the worst service I've ever been to - there is no possibility to buy a hot drink during a night, everything except of fast food is closed ! Why on earth there is information that it is 24h open service with Costa Coffe ??? The whole service area is very dark and not nice during a night.I felt very lucky when I get to the Esso fuel station - We were able to buy coffe, tea, snacks and newspapers... however a few weeks later I got an invoice from CP plus for parking at the service exceeding 2 hours !!! - first of all I've seen the signs informing about parking times only at the car park area but not at the Esso station, secondly I was aware that Roadchef and other services charge for their carparks but I didn't think the charges should be paid while using a fuel station facilities - could you please explain it?

I'm horrified at the prospect of travelling to England (even though I'm English) and WILL NOT!!! Stop at any service stations EVER AGAIN!!
Service stations are just that SERVICE stations. Originally designed to help prevent accidents by providing a place where motorists can rest if they get tired. Now they are a places to extract as much of a travellers money as possible and it appears from the comments above are now resorting to extortion to squeeze even more money out of unsuspecting travellers. And please spare me the 'making space' crap as I have never seen a rest area full.
There is however a simple answer. DON'T STOP AT THEIR EXTORTION SITES!!
Now I will be travelling throughout the UK as I have for many years on my journeys and will be spending a substantial amount of money as I stop and go. But THOSE GREEDY B%$T%rds will see none of it. In fact I will no longer accept expenses from service stations from my many employees either. (Which believe me WAS substantial). And I suggest you all do the same.
I suggest if you're reading this and thinking of a quick or long break, venture off the motorway where you will find plenty of places who will more than 'welcome' your money with a smile and not a clamp in sight.
They need our money and if they stop getting it they will learn the error of their greedy ways. Time to BLACK-EM!! And show them that the word SERVICE means more than simply being there.
Sad times when you can't simply stop for a rest without worry about waking up to a clamp on your wheel. Makes my blood boil.
Have fun on your travels and stay safe!!

One of our trucks stopped in this place due to a breakdown. When the driver left his truck and went inside the services, the vehicle was clamped by the brainless idiots of Parkin Control Management. We were forced to to pay 255,00 Pounds otherwise the vehicle would be towed away. We advised all our drivers not to use this place off betray and robbery any more

Got a letter saying I was parked there for 22 hours...even though I along with my car was at work on 12 hour nights. They used 2 separate visits one ariving and the other leaving.I wont use these services again....so be warned.

stopped at the services today, had a very pleasant experience, stopped to re fuel the car and for a spot of light lunch. found service very quick and efficient, with lost of smiley faces and the toilets were also very clean, would really recommend for anyone on their travels.
Kyle, Wed 13 Oct 2010
Stopped for lunch there en route to a cricket match for 30 minutes. Stopped there again on the way home for 5 minutes to use the toilet. Got a Parking Charge Notice from CP Plus, claiming that I had been parked there for 7 hours 26 minutes continuously, demanding £50, rising to £80 if I didn't pay early. Just had it cancelled over the phone. Don't be scared into paying this sort of thing, and avoid these services if you can!

I stopped at Maidstone with a caravan for about 4 hours last year without trouble, although a dutch camper van next to me was clamped and fined 300 euros for parking in the wrong area. As I wanted to stop off again this year, and was horrified by some of the comments, I emailed Road Chef and asked them what it would cost and how to pay (contact link from their web site). I received a reply the same day from a "real" person (name and title supplied) with some very helpful information about how to pay. Well worth the time and effort to find out -Thanks Road Chef. By the way it is a £10 charge for anything over 2 hours, but well worth it if you have just travelled 800 miles through France and need a rest!
Tony Udall, Tue 29 Jun 2010
We were hoping to park overnight at these services at the end of May as all campsites are full(or won't accept one night stays). I am worried now after reading these comments as I thought it was OK to stay overnight as long as the fee was paid.

Husband is a Class 1 driver, needed to use the facilities (loo) but the lorry park was full. The car park security officer instructed him to park in one of the coach bays. When my husband came out of the toiliet his lorry was in the progress of being clamped. £250.00 fine which he payed straight away for the threat of the vehicle being seized. He told the clamping attendant he was told to park there temporarily (approx 5 mins he was there) was negative response ''I don't give a f*ck who told you to park there, pay it now, or we seize''Absolutely diabolical.
Gemma Russon, Thu 11 Mar 2010
Be careful, do not stop there. I parked my van at 11:10pm and then I found clampers in action at 1:30am. To go away, I had to pay 140 euro cash without any receipt and the missing money to reach the required 300 euro were drawn from my Visa card. When I asked explanations about my trouble to the clampers, they answered that I had to stay in Italy If I did not know the rules. Is this the way how things actually go in England?
Marco Filippi, Sun 7 Feb 2010
We called in at 9.50am on Christmas Day only to find the whole service area, apart from fuel, closed. Why was this? You have been open on Christmas Day in previous years. If you do close down for a day why not say so on the overhead motorway information display boards - that would be a great help.

Please be careful where you park, Today I parked my VW Caddy Vanin the coach area at 08.15am, there are approximately 15 parking bays for coaches all of which were empty! However I did not park in the coachbays I parked at the kerbside opposite keeping the area clear for coaches. I went to use the toilet facilities returning to my van within 5 minutes to find a clamp had already been applied and a ticket being written, the time on the ticket is 08.21.The clampers do not use sign written vans, they use hire vehicles so as not to advertise clampers are on site! They maybe licenced, but this doesn't guarrantee a proffesional attitude they are ruthless! It was not a pleasant experience, I feel robbed of £195!
Alan Hartnoll, Tue 17 Nov 2009
They have recently decided not to offer 24 hour food now only 6am to 9pm
peter uings, Tue 10 Nov 2009
BEWARE if you park there. The clampers are theives. You will get clamped and ripped off. DO NOT STOP THERE.
See www.pepipoo.co.uk for details. Strange how the clampers card machines "don't work" so you have to pay cash to get released. what a con.

I visit the services every fornight as its a collection/drop off point for my son when he stays with his dad. I got to say the staff are fine, not the happiest bunch but do thier job. The floor is normally tidy tho not everytime I visit. The toilets however always seem rather dirty in my opinion, I am sure they are cleaned but are they cleaned throughly and if they are it must be very rare. I have been in other service stations and seen ones dirtier and ones much cleaner but these ones I visit often so would appear to me that its not just the rare occasion that cleanliness slips. Toilets are germ ridden and with swine flu floating around I wouldnt use them!

I quite agree with th comment about the rundown badly managed services. Creates a really bad impression when arriving from abroad. Shameful
Angi, Mon 11 Feb 2008
I stopped there on the 19th October 2007 on my way to Paris to watch the Rugby World Cup Final.
To cut a long and particularly gruesome story short, my wife and I shared a burger from the Wimpey at the service station and later that evening were both horrendously ill with food poisoning.
Our weekend was completely ruined as we were both so ill; I have never been so ill in my entire life and can’t even imagine what we ate there.
Matthew Unsworth, Tue 23 Oct 2007
At 19 july, at 3:00 at morning I visit with my co-driver the Roadchef Services in Maidstone on Motorway M20. The parking place for lorrys was overfilled. I am parking my bus on the parkground for coaches. ( in germany the name for a 3,5 tons transporter is “bus†– in england is the name for a bus a “coach†) I go to visit the toilet and drink a coffee. Than I make a fiew minutes break with my partner in my bus. After 20 minutes we hear a noise on our bus. I go out from the bus and see the parking fine notice under my windscreen whipper. This parking fine notice was from CP Plus company with the no. 8009771 to pay 80 pound sterling. Than I go around my bus and see the wheel-clamb on my rear wheel. In this moment came two employees from the Parking Control Management Limited with her car to my parkplace. They give me a parking fine notice with no. 54012 from her Company to pay 180 pound sterling !It is common in england that two several companys write parking fine notices for the same car and the same time ??
And now came the best :
the two employees from PCM Limited ( great and big bodys, but a very small brain – like gorillas ) extortet me with the following menace : “when you not pay the 180 pound we bring your car with a trailer to london, and than you must pay 500 pound sterling !†– it is extortion !!
And now came the criminal act from the two employees : they took 225 pound sterling instead 180 pound sterling money from me !!And they where so silly to confirm their fraud on the receipt !
These are robber baron methodes like the middle age, but not appropriate in the united europe from today. my lawyer said it is a criminal act and we want to make a reporting of an offence against the PCM Limited Company !
I must say in england give it a very good service on the motorway-stations. A good service to rob foreigners…….
Andreas Knoch, Sun 22 Jul 2007
visited these services on the way to dover very clean toilets and generally a good experience if a little small for the amount of coaches heading for dover
bryancashmore, Sat 24 Feb 2007
i had recently returned from my holiday in the south of france and had a 12hour journey through france. during which i needed to stop at various service stations for fuel and rest breaks. The service areas in france were top class. Imagine my embarrassment when i arrived at dover and made my way along the m20 and had to stop for further fuel at maidstone services where the facilities were very different. having refuelled, i went in to the payment area to also get some coffee. The coffee area was very poorly stocked and had to ask for cups, this took several minutes whilst the staff tried to find the cups, then a further 10mins trying to find the lids for these cups. The whole of the forecourt shop was extremely untidy with empty boxes and packaging laying around. Staff were helpful, but it appeared improperly managed as they were wandering around aimlessly as noone seemed to know where the cups or lids were kept. As this service area is probably the first that our EU friends will see in the UK, it is really embarrasing that this is what we have in comparison to their top rate service areas. I was not happy and something needs to be done.
