Tell us all about your experiences of this service area.
I visited this station on the 18th September after wanting a cold drink. I decided to go into Costa as I know they have a menu for cool drinks. Unfortunately the rude chap at Costa who was on shift around 1030pm refused to acknowledge what a cold drink was. His exact words were 'what are one of those'. I asked for a ice tea mint which is on the menu for Costa. I had to show him on the card cut out what I wanted and he replied he didn't know what that was and probably was one of the unpopular drinks. How dare he even respond to me in such manner. When asking him whether he can make a cold drink that including ice he said there is no ice left and that he could make me a cold latte. At this point I was so annoyed that I walked out. A cold latte? Is he having me on? I shall be making an official complaint to Costa about this and would want an update or an apology on why this man served me in such manner.

Thank you for visiting Roadchef Northampton and for your feedback regarding our parking charges. If you could please email your PCN reference number and contact details to email@example.com, we will investigate this matter further for you. We would also like to take the opportunity to explain our parking charges and the reasons why they are in place.
All motorway service areas in the UK have charged for parking over two hours for the last forty years and are in place with guidance from the Highways Agency.
This is not a new charge and we believe that our signange is extensive and clear, being displayed at the entrance to the site, within the parking areas and in the toilets. We obviously do not want visitors to be misled in any way about our parking procedures and charges.
Under the terms of our operating licences, our primary purpose is to provide a short respite and to not become a destination in our own right, with the overwhelming majority of customers spending less than thirty minutes on our sites.
We are obliged to provide parking spaces for the average demand; not charging for stays in excess of two hours is not and has never been an alternative for us, as our business model relies upon a flow of short term users and space. Free parking for an extended period would encourage far more long term park and ride style parking, which runs contrary to policy guidelines and would also make our business unsustainable.
We experience large numbers of people parking at our sites for significantly longer than two hours, who do not use the facilities in any way and deny use of spaces to the travelling public. Two hours free parking is sufficient for the vast majority of our customers, but in recognition of the fact that some may accidentally marginally overstay, we do not issue charge notices unless they are materially over the two hour limit. On payment of the appropriate fee, stays of over two hours are permissible, subject to space availability and many of our customers do make payment in person or via their mobile phone, without issue.
Thank you once again for your feedback and we look forward to hearing from you again.

Found myself nodding behind the wheel after a long bank holiday weekend - decided to pull off - have a snooze - then have a meal, a bit of shopping for things I did not need, read the paper and then a strong coffee and a bun at Costa. Fully refreshed I got back on the road - now awake and safe to drive two and a half hours later and about £35 lighter. I have today received a fine from "CP Plus" for the extra half hour for using this service station for exactly the purpose it is intended for - giving them money and obeying the law.
At no stage did I see a sign indicating a time limit or warning of any penalties. I will not be paying the fine - CP services have no legal standing - this is not a criminal matter and they now have my address for service of proceedings - they are welcome to issue in the county court and I will defend.
Until they grow up and recognise their responsibilities I recommend that you do your best to make it to the next service station!

We have just visited the services on the Northbound side of the M1and we were utterly disgusted at the lack of customer service and general respect for members of the public. Although understandably busy on a Saturday morning of the bank holiday weekend, there was a distinct lack of urgency to take orders at the McDonald's restaurant. After a 30 minute wait in line, the young man (Alistair) I believe, found it appropriate to behave in a childish manor. Smacking the down food and bottles on the trays of those waiting in front of us with attitude. When the lady he was serving expressed her disapproval the manager was present and did apologise to her. However, he carried on, and the manager swiftly left the tills, as did all other staff, to huddle around the food area. There was a point where none of the tills were occupied by staff, with no explanation and still with many people waiting. The young man that served us (Lewis) had an attitude to rival his colleague, and when the lady in line in front of us challenged him about the service she was (or wasn't) receiving he proceeded to snap at her and began to argue, again with attitude shouting that it wasn't his fault. At this point, I took it upon myself to offer this young man a bit of advise being that however stressed- you never argue back to a customer. No apology for the wait or reason was explained to people waiting.
I appreciate that it was a busy time but this is no excuse for the treatment that your staff in McDonalds gave to paying customers at your services,
I can only suggest that the Management of the restaurant impress on to their staff the importance of good customer service and ensure they employ people who understand basic people skills. I would also suggest that when their staff members are stretched they do not leave them to get on with it and struggle.
I've sent this to two different places as I would appreciate being told what is going to be done about this. regards, Amy Pollard

We're very sorry to hear that your husband was not treat in a courteous and professional manner during his interview at Roadchef Northampton. The experiences you have described do not meet the usual high standards which we expect as a company in such a situation.
Obviously, this is a very specific issue and one which we would like to see resolved, so if you would like to forward any information that you do have regarding this to "firstname.lastname@example.org" then we will investigate further for you.

Am not surprised by comments if the management is anything to go by!!!! My husband applied for a job that was advertised. He was contacted in mid January, on a Sunday and invited for an interview that day, not a problem, he was there within few hours. Went through interview and was told the manager would contact him. Nothing, after many phone calls and messages left, still nothing. Suddenly end February the manager phoned saying can you come now??? My husband arrived 2 hours later at 5pm. He was left waiting in the main eating area for over an hour before the manager decided to come and acknowledge he was there. He spoke to him for a while, then disappeared again! He came back, asked for his id documents, photo copied them and then disappeared again! He gave him a coffee on his return, asked for his documents again, to photo copy, oh and gave him a burger, then he was gone again!!! He returned and asked my husband to have a trial on the till etc. Spoke to my husband saying to leave things with him and he would phone him. By this time it was 9pm, 4 hours!!!!Surprise, surprise nothing. My husband has phoned and left messages but nothing. Their loss as my husband would have been an asset to them.If this is how they treat prospective staff am not surprised visiting members of the public are not impressed!!!!!!

Stopped off here on Thursday travelling North. Can't say much for the surroundings but at Costa I was impressed by the service and friendly manner of Elson ....he was welcoming, polite and really seemed to care about what he was doing......well done that guy.....This sort of service is not seen on motorway service areas much and I use a lot of them

We had a self service cup of tea & cup of coffee yesterday. The cost was what we would have expected from a 4/5* hotel !The drinks were not bad but not 4/5* either .

stopped for toilets and food.
could not use toilets. three were empty but locked. couldn't see occupants feet anyway. one had toilet roll dispenser ripped from wall and thrown on floor. others were in the most disgusting state. This from some one who has experience of toilets in India. The final clean and undamaged one had no toilet paper.
reported this to a disinterested assistant manager. no apology offered and the real manager was "too busy"
Left without using toilet or eating. never to return to any road chef establishment.

Good to have a McDonald's staff are slow tho!! And.....has anyone one else seen that women's hair do at costa northbound???? Omg
Helen, Sat 1 Mar 2014
I stopped at the roadchef for 49 minutes over the apparent 'free parking period' however the weather was horrendous. I was tired and travelled from London to Leeds, If I didn't stop I probably would have crashed...and there was no way I could see any charge restrictions or rules and regulations due to weather. I am definitely appealing this but wondered if anyone else had done the same and the outcome...
john anderson, Thu 27 Feb 2014
Used to be great services, now absolutely disgusting. Always filthy, toilets dirty, baby change filthy, tables rarely cleared in eating areas. All round feel like need shower after stopping here. Costa used to be great but now seems to be poorly made, dirty and uncomfortably slow. The only place worse is Watford Gap.
Steph F, Sat 28 Dec 2013
Hi please be aware of a racist member of staff named Sharon at the northbound petrol station. I was dealt with very rudely and made to have been stealing in front of other customers as she told them I hadn't payed for my fuel. She also made me move tills 3 times and thought it was ok. In between moving me she served another white gentlemen. Fortunately I had payed and her behavior was caught in cctv so the police can now prosecute!! It's not good to be dealt with differently then looked at like a thief just because one of the staff doesn't like the look of you. Good thing for cameras but hope no 1 else gets treated this way in future! I am not racist and never come accross this before but glad I can prosecute!
Mr Patel, Sat 28 Dec 2013
I had a meeting there and was over there for about 3 hours, and was told I would receive a parking ticket if I don't pay £20, this is a joke as I was only there for an extra hour and would have received a £90 ticket. I had a colleague there who came 30 minutes later and instead of her paying we just left. They should charge you by the hour not a fixed rate fee as its day light robbery. At least if we have a meeting there the shop are profiting with people buying coffees and lunch.

i was so angry with the behaviour of burger company employees but noe after reading all the reviews i think i chose the wrong place to eat.good news is with so many unhappy customres it wont last long
dr jyoti kashyap, Fri 16 Aug 2013
Stopped for some hot food. The Burger Company tries to be like Burger King but is over priced and terrible. Burger full of gristle. Discussing could not eat it. Only positive thing was the staff were very nice, smiling, and have full refund after two bites without question.
Thanks staff. Terrible company.Never stop at a road chef ever again.
Joe, Sun 11 Aug 2013
I popped into your Northampton Roadchef on the way home from a business trip at about 7.30pm Wednesday 3rd July to get some food to go (evening meal) - I wanted something hot so went to 'the Burger Co' to get a burger and fries and then headed off after I had bought a couple of other things in the services. I did not object to the high price as it was late and I wanted something hot for the road. However the burger was dreadful - it was the full of grissle, chewey and tasteless - I would probably be not surprised if it was full of horsemeat; the fries were also uncooked and not very nice. I could not take it back as I was already on the road. I will never eat at the company again - and it is extremely doubtful I will ever return to Roadchef - I felt sick after eating it and I am not sure it was fit for human consumption, needless to say I did not finish the burger which was extremely disappointing considering the price. I would like a response as I am considering taking it further. The burger was quite simply revolting ! I will add the service was okay; but overall very disappointed.

I am not usually one to complain unless something really deserves it but today's visit to the service station toilets was disgusting. No soap, no toilet roll in any toilet, water and mess all over the floor. To be honest I have been to better portaloo's. there was no sign of the toilets having been cleaned at all today. Disgraceful. There was no one visible to complain to. And by the looks of other comments on here this isn't unusual. You should be ashamed of whoever manages this site.
Lindsay Northcote, Sat 1 Dec 2012
Visited to day. Gents toilets absolutely disgusting state. I will not stop there again!!!
Alan Shaw, Tue 30 Oct 2012
I visited this site yesterday at around 5pm with my 16month old grandson. The first place I visited was the baby change room. This was disgusting, I had no option to use it because my grandson needed to be changed. The room is not fit for purpose. It is too small, it was filthy, there was no soap in the dispensers, the toilet did not flush and the smell was overpowering.
Having recovered from the trauma of using that room, I had to find something suitable for a 16 month old child. The childrens menu was just a list of foods products none of which were healthy and appetising. I finally decided to purchase a portion of Cottage Pie but of course that came with chips. I said it was for the child so did not want the chips....When we reached the till, regardless of whether or not I wanted the chips, I had to pay for them because that was the price of the meal!!!!!!
I did complain to the manager who was very apologetic and offered us something in place of the chips but we did not want an alterntive.
I will never ever visit this site again
Lena Haspell, Mon 8 Oct 2012
Utterly disgraceful - but I'm not the first to say it! The toilets in particular are appalling - at least one door missing, another cubicle without a bolt, insufficient loo paper, and in most of the wash-hand basins the plug had been re-attached to the basin with wrapping tape. Can a well-patronised services like this one really not afford to have a plumber call and make proper repairs? And do they not have someone inspecting the facilities every hour, like most reputable organizations? This really ought to be possible, given the over-priced food and drink on sale elsewhere.
Please take customers' comments seriously. It's in your own interest. I, for one, intend to drive past the next time I'm down that way.
George, Wed 8 Aug 2012
After reading some of the comments regarding cleanliness at specifically the Southbound services, I am unpleasantly surprised that no one has taken the comments seriously.I have just had a telephone call from my daughter, travelling down from Yorkshire to London. In her words, a lot of hassle getting key for the disabled toilet, to use for nappy changing: "totally disgusting, I would not have changed a dog in there, pipe leaking; overall, not fit for any purpose. My daughter lives in Dubaiand obviously many other tourist will have to use these squalid facilities; someone needs taking to account for this shocking state of affairs
Roger Gosling, Thu 12 Jul 2012
the toilets at this roadchef are a total disgrace! a group of ladies on our coach trip, travelling North from London needed to use these facilities before buying food, The toilets and wash areas were simply disgracefull . even the soap dispensers were caked in dirty thick soap, the seats were filthy both the top and worse underneath, . most ladies refused to use them and also did not buy food. I shall write to the public health authorities for that area,
MRS P HIGGINSON, Fri 13 Apr 2012
Toilets could do with an update and clean.
Mark Reddyhoff, Sat 31 Mar 2012
Toilets not as clean as other services (such as the excellent M40 Oxford or M1 Leicester Forest East services). We were served two extremely grumpy and rude women in the "Hot Food company" cafe. They didn't tell us about the free child meal and when we asked about it said nothing, just thrust a poster in our faces. The food wasn't terrible, it was distinctly average though.
Jamie Cormack, Tue 13 Mar 2012
Although this is a twin site with no direct pedestrian access between sites, I think it is worth noting that both sites have full access to the A43 and therefore full road access to the other side should anyone wished to do so, which is an unusual set up for a twin site. Therefore you can get to McDonald's going north if you don't want to go to Watford Gap. The main services building is clean, staff are friendly and helpful at McDonalds. The site urgently needs a wash facility over haul though, sink plugs held up by bits of string broken taps and wall switches badly let down a good clean site. The McDonalds is a welcome addition, however I'd like to see a proper outside seating area for next summer.
Jozef Nakielski, Thu 29 Sep 2011
Rude staff as usual and £6 for one hash brown - the littlest portion of beans and one manky egg - chap at till forgot my coffee so stood there and he said 'what you waiting for' - disgusting place

A PRAYER FACILITY/ROOM FOR THE TRAVELLERS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Cllr Mahmood Hussain, Wed 21 Sep 2011
Whatever you do, please do not eat at this services. We opted to have 2 hot meals and a children's meal. After being made to wait, we were told that there was no mash for the sausage and we would have to wait another 10 minutes. So ordered just the child meal - which was fried egg, baked beans and crispy chicken. Somehow they thought I wanted mash and not crispy chicken so unknowingly I was made to wait for 10 minutes anyways. When the mash came, it had a strange smell. My lil one who loves baked beans took a spoonful of it and refused to eat more. So I gave him just the fried egg. For ourselves we ordered chicken burgers and onion rings. The burgers were stale and onion rings too! Reached home and my son and husband both had a stomach upset. The quality of food is appalling and it's expensive too!! Definitely not going to stop here again if I can help it!!
KP, Sun 21 Aug 2011
There is only one word to describe this. Rubbish. The apparent hot food is always cold, and the staff are grumpy 99% of the time. The only good this about it are the Whsmith and Costa.
Stevie, Sun 22 May 2011
Changing room was not safety. The changing table almost fall when I put my toddler weight 10kg. It was very scary. I needed to hold that table by my knee. Not good.

One of my favourite service stations in the world. The door handles on the loos are a bit high though.
Bilbo Baggins, Sun 19 Dec 2010
I was so astonished at the cost and quality of the food supplied by The Burger Company that I felt I ought to leave a comment. 2 Adults, 3 kids; 3 burgers (2 veggie) and 2x6 chicken nuggets, all as standard meals (noticably smaller than McD's smallest drinks and chips sizes) for just £30.45!! What a joke. You could buy that at McD's for £20. I could forgive this to some extent if the food were of higher quality, but no, they were actually worse. Big disappointment. Avoid.
N. Moss, Fri 17 Sep 2010
I was absolutely appalled by the standard of cleanliness in the toilet area. I have a 5 month old that I would have rather changed in the car park than in the toilet, it was leaking there was blue paper all over the floor and the toilet appeared to be blocked. When I took my other son to the ladies the sanitary bins were overflowing and he asked what was in them and when I saw the man checking them I saw a very superficial look as he dropped the tissue paper all over the floor... I did point this out to him.

Twfan. have you paid your bill yet? if not i would think twice before doing so check if this scam is actually legal, they will send threatening letters that look legal. In my experiance they have never taken any one to court for not paying. They play on peoples fears whom pay straight away this far outweighs the ones that dont so its a game of chance for them yes they will send more letters but will anything come of this I think not.Check on the internet for more advise before parting with any money there is a lot of advise out there

As almost every Airport in the UK and Hospital and most offices have now a Prayer room/area designated, I am thinking it would be so beneficial for the people and for the sales of the service stations if we could have a similar facility in these Motorway service stations? If people or the staff think it is a good idea, I would like to help financially. Many thanks.
Mr Arif Ali, Wed 26 May 2010
i come here quite often and dont think its the best services but its not the worst. i find that the restaurant is not great, and the staff seem to just stand around talking and the food is not fresh. i think costa is their best part, the staff are friendly and although its not cheap the drinks are definatly good. i think the north side is better than south, and the cakes are better on north as on south they just fall apart.
Anonymous, Wed 27 Jan 2010
We use this service area every month, it has definitely gone down hill. The staff are unhelpful and have never heard of please and thank you. The main restaurant seating area had tables with dirty dishes still on them after 45 minutes and the floor was grubby and had rubbish on it. The Costa coffee area is a shambles now, it used to be so tidy and friendly, now it is cluttered and the staff couldn't care less.
Overall poor, we only use it as its a convenient half way stop for us. Avoid if you don't need to use it.
John, Tue 28 Oct 2008
These sevrices are convenient for meeting up with people when traveling futher in one car, as both North and Southbound carriageways can be accessed via the road under the motorway.

The footbridge between the two sides is closed and is a major problem if car is left on south side and you are dropped off on north side.
