I want to thank all of those subscribers to this page for finally answering a question that I have been unable to answer since the Euro Referendum
Quite simply, I really could not understand how anyone could be so stupid as to see Brexit as anything that was at all logical or remotely sensible.
Then I check out where to stop on my trip to Cardiff from Faversham and stumble across this page!
Lots and lots of people blaming a Bloke called Hewitt for them being so stupid that they give money to a total scammer
Perhaps they would be better setting up a webpage blaming the Giant for Jack swapping his Mums cow for 5 magic beans?
Why can't people accept responsibility for their own stupidity?
Oh, I know, it's because of the EU
Is the scammer European?please, please, please

I normally stop here from my way back from London on a Friday night n tried out one of the new restaurants called Arlos, awful! Honestly one of the worst sandwiches I have ever eaten! Last nigh at 6.30pm a young lady sold me a bacon lettuce baguette, Oh jeez it was bad... Very very doughy almost on the edge of raw, the bacon roasted a bit rancid n gone off... Yuk! I chose this restaurant as there were no queues, I now know why! I still feel sick

3 times I have complained about the female toilets at Reading Services Westbound! They are absolutley disgusting and badly in need of refurbishment! Never any soap! The toilets are filthy and i am now going to stop going there!
Angie, Thu 9 Jun 2016
I have just been scammed by this woman too 8 December 2015.I have filled in long long questionaire on activefraud/police website, please all do the same . This woman is earning £100'S of pounds aday!!!!!I want to go back there and when she asks for money have my phone on camera/film... maybe that would help.IF YOU READ THIS BEFORE BEING SCAMMED , she seems genuinely distressed, has left wallet on car roof and driven off, run out of fuel and needs to get to Cardiff.... do not believe her!!!!!
tricia prince, Thu 10 Dec 2015
Do you have a photo of her by any chance? I was scammed by her two weeks agoí ½í¸°í ½í¸¢

Staying at the travel lodge at Westbound Reading Services and just got swindled by the same woman trotting out the Cardiff/petrol story. Looking at a photo of Charlotte Branford, it is unmistakably her - wearing glasses and a woolly hat at the time of my encounter not half an hour ago. Fortunately it was only £8
Benedict Holme, Sun 29 Nov 2015
Yep, she's active, today I gave her a fiver in Matalan car park, Reading. She had "lost her car keys and had to get to Henley" . I quizzed her in depth, she's incredibly plausible and should be acting on East Enders except she's a bit posh. I didn't really believe her story but decided to give her a bit as I concluded she must be in a state to resort to this and its the season of generosity. I would have hoped if my daughter was ever in that situation that cynicism wouldnt win out. I got home and my wife told me she's notorious. Having Googled her, I find she is a career fraudster and I'm now annoyed that she is exploiting people's generous nature, and no doubt causing cynicism where people are genuinely in need of assistance. She was wearing a woolly hat today.
AIdan, Wed 25 Nov 2015
Yes, certainly still active. I gave her £20 last night -she looked exactly like the woman in the photo only was wearing glasses.
Alan, Wed 25 Nov 2015
She is still active. The same happened to us last Friday - the 13th... (November). She was travelling to Cardiff and needed money for the petrol and the Severn Bridge.
John Williams, Tue 17 Nov 2015
You'll be please to find out he's gone down for this (third time) today. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-e...

just looked at the picture of Charlotte Branford who was jailed in the summer for 6 months. If this is our woman then she is she out.
Jonathan, Sat 31 Oct 2015
Still at it. Just gave her 20 quid near tgi Friday in Reading about 2 hours ago and now just decided to google it and found this. Told me she worked at Prudential And had locked her car in the car park after working late and needed to get the train to Swindon. Obviously went it to a lot more convincing detail.
Same bitch. Different story
Michael Barnes, Fri 23 Oct 2015
Arrived at these services at 2am after a delayed flight from Skiathos to Gatwick. On entering the services we couldn't believe our eyes, dirty plates/cartons on tables everywhere, chips, beans, you name it leftover food on all the tables. No staff to be seen, no-one to ask for a coffee. One woman customer was sitting at a table and she informed me that all the staff had gone out for a fag! Eventually a couple of them returned and reluctantly served us with coffees. And to top it all had an encounter outside with the infamous Chloe Bishop aka Charlotte Branford, asking us for money for fuel. Will never use these services again.
helenrb, Tue 22 Sep 2015
Just got stung by her on Tuesday the 1st of September around midnight. Asked for £35, i only wanted to give her £10 but I only had £20's on me, so gave her £20. I was only half expecting her to repay which is why i didn't give her the full amount. I felt bad for her and I was in a good mood plus it was freezing out. Her accent and vocabulary didn't match her cheap mobile, which did raise a flag, but i felt for her being stuck. I grew up in a rough area and am very streetwise, she needs to quit scamming and start acting, she's exceptionally good.

Approached in the carpark of Membury services by a thin fella with a Cornish accent he had me over for £70 claimed he had to get to Cornwall etc, said his card had been refused because for the life of him he could not remember the pin No , claimed the breakdown services refused to help him as he was towing a trailer with 3 marble slabs on (Claimed he was a Stone Mason collecting some marble for a job) and as they were so heavy he was classed as a commercial vehicle , so the Green Flag driver left him stranded with no help ,so l gave him £70 to help him up off the motorway and home, as the services he said on the motorway were going to charge him £1600 to get his vehicle of the motorway and home to Penzance ! Well go figure turns out his details are bogus, and any calls l make to his phone are rejected, so l guess the cash has gone now, but trust me when l say this scam is very convincing, even while l was driving he received calls from was was supposed to be the Trafic Police and the breakdown Services even his Dad and Wife etc etc, So trust me when l say its a well planned and organised scam, l am a market Trader and have seen many scams done over the years in my days working the London markets, and consider myself far from being a mug, but as l have said in my defence this fella is good and polished at his game and very, very believable, let's hope l run into him again one day eh?
Les Jones, Tue 1 Sep 2015
Yep, my one talked about Southend. Next time, it happens I will report it straight to the service station folk
Hello, Fri 28 Aug 2015
She is still working this scam ........she hit me again this year having done it to me last year at almost the same time of year ..... I told her she had hit on me before 12 months before with the same story ....she brazenly carried it on and insisted that she would give me her w edding ring etc .. .....how gullable am I ! even though she had given me the same story last year I doubted my self enough to fall for it again ! My philosophy is "random acts of kindness ...senseless acts of beauty " My only salvation is that it is HER karma and not mine ...... how persistently evil is this woman to prey on the kindness and gullability of strangers.....
Chris Panic, Mon 17 Aug 2015
hi just to let you know this scam is still happening. I didn't know this was a scam until i just read about it!! actually felt bad for them being in that situation .luckily we didn't give them any money or details. Was on the 19th July about 11.30-midnight West Bound ,we were approached by a well dressed mid 30's lady with the same line as below . "do you speak English ...my husband has drove off with the wallet on top of the car and we are stuck here and need to get back to Cardiff etc...... they have a high powered vehicle and need toll money". she was offering a ring to cover as assurance etc. sadly we weren't the only people she approached in the time we stopped, so god knows how many people fell for it.
Owen, Thu 13 Aug 2015
Went to Burger King here on Sunday Morning and when I went to get our burgers out of the bag discovered loads of old receipts and other rubbish in the bottom of the bag. The assistant must have known they were there as she checked the bag. Sadly we were hurtling along M4 when I noticed
Julie Tatford, Wed 5 Aug 2015
This just happened to us today at 9:30pm same woman, same story, same bad teeth. Looking back at the comments I'm disgusted MOTO services have know about this for so long and more hasn't been done about it. The sins clearly aren't working I personally didn't see any. I won't ever be stopping at here again.
Carley, Sun 28 Jun 2015
She certainly is persistent - I fell for the usual story at lunch time on 28/05/15 - westbound services. How dumb must I be!
Paul, Thu 28 May 2015
Still happening - I got done for £40 on Thursday 10pm! :(
Andy pandy, Sat 18 Apr 2015
Me too! 8pm tonight Reading west bound. Sitting in my car sending texts after a v long day & she tapped on my window. I was suspicious & she had same story "Do you speak English?" Husband left wallet on roof of car, has to get home to Swansea etc. I'm a pretty suspicious person BUT she was very PLAUSIBLE. Well- spoken & articulate. In back of my mind I suspected it was probably a scam so I only parted with £10. The best part is I had seen the "fuel fraud" warning sign Reading eastbound this morning, but what is fuel fraud?? It read like 'don't hand over money to anyone trying to sell you fuel' Clearly I wasn't buying fuel...except I sort of was. The warning us not clear as to exactly what this is about. I'm with Chris Spinks- this is not good enough MOTO! Reading more posts I thought exactky the same thing about the teeth í ½í¸‚í ½í¸‚ it's not a good look. Maybe she could use some of her fraudulently obtained cash on a bit of dental work! The other observation was that she left pretty quick after getting the cash. She didn't press me for more but I think she knew I was suspicious. The signs need to be clearer. Helpful to know you can obtain fuel in an emergency by filling in a form. Next call is to MOTO & Reading police.
Annie Cartwright, Wed 11 Mar 2015
So I was checking my tyre pressures at the westbound Reading services stop on the M4 at 8:15pm, when I was approached by the notorious Chloe Bishop. Gave the same old story of her husband leaving his wallet on the car roof. She said she was going to Swansea and would need to pay the bridge toll. Her poor dentition and convoluted story had alarm bells ringing from the word go. My wife gave her 90 pence change that we had in the car to get rid of her. She seemed quite annoyed, didn't thank us and left saying "I'll take what I can get at this point". Reported her to the police immediately and she has been arrested. I've given my statement to the police and she will be likely going to court.
Stalem, Wed 11 Mar 2015
Done by the same woman on Thursday- have managed to find out where she lives so watch this space!!
Ian clark, Sun 8 Mar 2015
Just been done by "Chloe Bishop" also. Last night(5-3-15) reading west bound. If I find her........
Ian clark, Fri 6 Mar 2015
Well, don't I feel stupid for having fallen for this too. I felt sorry for her about 2 weeks ago on the Westbound Membury services on a Friday night when the M4 locked up - it was a freezing cold night, she seemed plausible enough and I foolishly gave her £40 - watched her fill up and she took my number etc - never heard back. She was driving a diesel Peugeot saloon, 406 if I remember correctly. If I see her again I will kick the headlights in. That will teach me to be a good Samaritan.
Pete Reeves, Mon 9 Feb 2015
To Brynn Hewitt,
Type "service station scam" into Google and you will find this is the TOP result. It's pretty disgusting that this has been allowed to go on for so long. You have a duty of care to prevent harm or loss to your visitors/customers which you are failing to provide adequately. The signs (a cop-out in the first place) are clearly not doing their job.
What are you doing to resolve this issue?
Christopher Spink, Tue 3 Feb 2015
I am really sorry to hear that you were scammed too, Nina. It makes me sick to see that this woman is still up to her tricks and preying upon good natured people such as yourself.
Sue Dickins, Mon 2 Feb 2015
I feel absolutely sick and horrified to read these comments. I have just been a victim of this woman and her scam last night. I am a young female student who was concerned about a young woman who said she and her husband were stuck because of the wallet etc and the petrol station wouldn't give her an advance. I gave her 20 cash and took out 40 from a machine so that she could safely get home. She asked to borrow my phone so she could call her husband and then called her phone so that I could text her my bank details for transferring the money. I have not heard from her since. I maxed out my overdraft to help her and now I feel sick to my stomach. I cannot afford to loose £60. I know it is stupid now but I just wanted to help and she assured me she would transfer the money urgently. I know I am going to have to come to terms with the money loss and will have to find someway to pay my rent now without it but I just really don't want other people to be in this horrible situation too. I've spent the whole morning crying and worrying now about money concerns. I wish this upon no one. What do I do know? Is it the police I call?
Nina, Mon 2 Feb 2015
Just been done by the lady at reading services, same story as everyone else. Will report to the police but surely the management need to deal with this?
Christopher Spink, Thu 22 Jan 2015
This woman is still at it. My daughter and I stopped at Reading westbound at 10.15pm on Thursday on our way back from Heathrow. We didnt get caught out by her. I put in a crimestoppers report with a description, time, date etc. I can only suggest others do the same so hopefully the Police will insist that the Moto management will put a notice in the toilets and by food vendors to alert people.
c davis, Wed 21 Jan 2015
We did the same as Mrs Jackman (see below 4 months ago) and drew in to the car park at 01.15 am, tired after arriving at Stanstead after delays on our flight from Italy, and while driving to Cornwall. We went to sleep, had some breakfast in the cafe and then drove on at 08.22. Now we have had a Charge Notice from CP Plus for £100 (£50 if we pay right away). We had no idea there was a charge for parking and never saw a notice. Has anyone else been caught this way, and is there anything we can do about it?
Robin, Fri 9 Jan 2015
Hey Natalie. Not sure if you got my last message. Could you possibly hit me up your e-mail address or drop me a message on firstname.lastname@example.org. Thankyou

Dear Mr Hewitt,I see the signs you put up in your car park are doing their job.
Sue Dickins, Thu 8 Jan 2015

Johno Fisher, Wed 7 Jan 2015
Same thing has literally just happened to me a few hours ago, sat in my car after driving from East London to Somerset, I was tired and she approached me, I'm too much of a trusting person anyway but being tired I wasn't thinking straight at all, and being a lone female I was concerned for her so I gave her £40. She gave me a phone number but I'm assuming now this is fake, wouldn't take the money off of me near the services only near my car at the back of the car park, I just didn't think at all. It's no problem for me money wise it just needs to be stopped as its disgusting they still allow her on site.
Emily, Mon 5 Jan 2015
Can you guys all email me in firstname.lastname@example.org? See what we can do about this.
Johno Fisher, Sun 4 Jan 2015
I found this....
A woman from East Reading has appeared in court on two fraud charges.
Charlotte Branford, 33, of King’s Road, was arrested on November 4, and charged the next day with two counts of fraud by false representation.
The charges relate to incidents at the M4 westbound Reading Services on September 15, and at the M4 eastbound Reading Services on September 16 where people were asked for money after being given a false statement of why the money was needed.
Branford appeared at Reading Magistrates Court on Thursday, where she was given a conditional bail to reappear on November 28.
Natalie, Sun 4 Jan 2015
I too got hit by the legendary Chloe Bishop. 12.05 which I am assuming was before Geoff. She gave me the same story with her husband leaving wallet on the roof. only brought cash with her for NYE. Brought her old phone. Very well spoken and dressed. Blue winter womens hat. Well dressed. Approached me though strangely with "Excuse me are you engish. I was with a couple of my friends and I was so hungover. She said she needed to get back to Cardiff. basically she was so polite. Had every base covered. Im guessing if I asked her for ID she would have had Chloe Bishop on it too because who else gives the same name twice.
I did notice though after giving off to me an upper class status that she had pretty bad teeth. I hope she is reading this so I can atleast let her know. Chloe, you need some dental floss, a toothbrush and maybe dentures. I gave her money and she kept on referring to the bridge toll. Insisting more. I asked her what car does she have. She said . 3.0 Audi Diesel. This triggered even more suspicion. Who would spit out that it was a diesel, and its engine size.
As soon was the money was in hand she hit a little bit of speed heading toward the petrol station. Not really much of a thanks. She had all bases covered. I was so tired, got in my car and instantly was like...."You can get petrol without paying for it by filling in a form" which I have done before when I lost my wallet. I slowly started following her across the car park towards the petrol station. I needed a bit of petrol. Told my friends to keep an eye on her, I ran into the petrol station. Went to the guy, "See this lady, she hasnt come and asked for petrol or money has she" Followed by him saying "She does it all the time?!?!?!" ........
Surely, this means the service station is doing jack all about putting a stop to it
There was no 3.0 litre audi diesel in site. I ran out, I saw her run around the corner after waving at someone. She wasnt alone.
I got round the corner of the petrol station and she had vanished. Nowhere to be seen. But a lorry with a shifty looking driver who was speaking to someone behind him in the bay. As soon as he made eye contact with me the light went off in his cabin and he peeled out of there. I got the registration and identfied the vehicle. I will gain cctv from the petrol station to put her in it.
But then Geoffrey below said he was hit on the first, what time was this Geoff? Westbound Reading services or Eastbound?
I went to Amsterdam a few weeks back shortly after 2 teenagers had taken that white heroine. There was huge light beacons everywhere saying "DO NOT BUY FROM STREET DEALERS, YOUR LIFE WILL BE AT RISK" On huge flashing signs.
I suggest something similar. Peoples lives could be at risk if they approach this women for all we know. The services are clearly doing NOTHING about it, and especially with the staff member saying "Oh she does that all the time" Sort it out, disgusting to be honest.
Ive had the Armani boot salesman before. That to be honest should be clearly avoided as it just is far too risky anyway. This women however is a con artist. Does it for a living. Well spoken. Mid to late 30s, already dead if you judge by her teeth
Johno Fisher, Fri 2 Jan 2015
Yes, we got hit by the same lady with the same story yesterday (the 1st) at Reading services. Again, well spoken, again with the same story of her love bunny having left their wallet on roof of their car, and having to get to Cardiff. We had some concerns with some of her story, which included repeated claims to be middle class (i.e. the assumption that no criminals are middle class), and trading on being English (unlike "unhelpful foreign truck drivers", there are of course, no English criminals!). However, in the end my wife gave her a tenner to get rid of her and because there was, of course, a possibility she may be genuine; we had just got off a 24 hour flight and had a long way to go, which makes it easier to get bamboozled. Clearly, she has chosen her station well, as it is the main services westward from Heathrow She made all manner of hints that it would be far better we went to a cash machine and got her some decent wonga... I guess a tenner for a half an hours work tax free is a fair bit more than the national minimum wage, but a bit less than hoped for. As the previous commenter remarked, this is really quite sad. One does try to do the right thing, and this will place genuine motorists in need in an impossible situation. Surely, it is rocket science for police to identify and at least scare away such individuals.
Geoffrey Wood, Fri 2 Jan 2015
Yes same as below... Unfortunately with only dollars to hand I was no help scammer Chloe Bishop! She was so desperate to get back to Cardiff my husband and I eager to get home ourselves!!! I had very little eye contact from the Scammer this highlighted my gut feeling! However it's New Year's Eve and on a high from our travels my husband saw the well spoken lady as somewhat genuine?? Athough he made her stumble after his first Q.. Where do you live in Cardiff, she was a little unclear etc! He still listened in good a Faith!
She explained that she was desperate to get back to Cardiff, her and her partner were visiting family in when her partner stupidly left his wallet on the top of car etc that her partner lived in Grove Rd Cardiff when my husband questioned her....we should have drove off as she had no knowledge of Cardiff!!! She was in a new relationship, she turned away and started to get emotional...my mum would kill me for this. Then she went on to say that her partner was trying to get somewhere with the police etc!
She said take a photo of me etc, come and see where my car etc my parter is offer the petrol station trying to sort it all out, he's trying to get a bit of money from the truck drivers as the police have been useless!!
By this point I'm not in the driving seat but frowning to why her partner would leave her approach cars etc? She said that she was waiting to approach a couple so that it was safe and that she felt so embarrassed in doing this!!! I bet she did!
She was looking at our back seat quite a lot! It did have cases ...so weird as the lady spoke with very good English. She clocked that I clocked she was looking at some guy walking past also. I'm very streetwise ...Normally!
Hopefully she will sort herself out, That's life I guess, a real shame a bright 38-40 year old would do such a thing! It's 2015 and she will be £20 quid up from us!
Always go with your gut instinct say No even when it's the hardest lesson to yourself!
Then decide if you want to help the person who is rock bottom!
Her teeth were a bit of a give away too, I just can't quite put my finger on it but hopefully I've painted a picture! I will report it tomorrow!
Always learning.... Natalie
Natalie, Thu 1 Jan 2015
It seems like we fell for the same scam that many others have fallen for on here. A young distressed woman approached us as we were getting into our car and said that she had left her purse on top of her car and had driven off. She explained that she was on her way to Cardiff to pick up her grandparents who both have Alzheimer's. She said that no one in the service station would help her and her family werent around so would we be able to lend her some money for petrol and the bridge toll and she would post it back to us. We felt sorry her and thought that we would want someone to help us if we were in the same situation so gave her £20. Soon after we gave her the money we questioned ourselves and realised that it could be part of a scam. We also had to fill up with petrol so proceeded to the station and thought it was strange that she didn't follow. We waited for a while as we didn't want to believe that we had been scammed but she never showed up. Therefore we drove back to into the service station car park and saw her approaching more people as they were getting into their cars. We were so angry with what we had seen we decided to confront her as to why she was still at the service station and not on her way to Cardiff. She said that she had been charging her mobile phone and was about to leave and get petrol. We then said that we had been watching her for 30 minutes at which point she turned her back and ran off. This is a very sad scam as this will put us off helping people out in the future who may be in genuine need.
Peter, Wed 31 Dec 2014
just thought I'd scroll down to see when the first report of scamming was mentioned. 2012 and that customer was was asking for signs to warm customers about these confidence tricksters. If I hadn't acted upon what my customers were telling me I would neither have a job nor a business.DO SOMETHING !!!!
Sue Dickins, Sun 7 Dec 2014
and by the way, Mr Hewitt - where does it say in these posts that the incidents were 'in the evening' and what has that got to do with anything? You have a duty of care to your customers. Clearly, you are failing.
Dear Mr Hewitt,I have emailed you. I do hope I will not see any further tales of scamming woe on this page.
Re comment below - we just had the same lady in VW touran in Brentwood shell station - 2 kids , crying, asking for cash to get back to Basingstoke as she had been to hospital to see her nan and needed cash to get home. Thankfully I googled and saw the post below. We informed she could pay via the telephone.
Mrs L, Sat 6 Dec 2014
It happens to me this evening. A lady in a silver VW Touran stopped me and crying she told me that she was to hospital to visit her father and she forgot her wallet. She said that she needs some money for fuel and I gave her £40 impressed by her cries and her small daughter. I don't want to do a wrong judgment but if that was a scamthis is the first time that I fall for and the last time that I help someone
anonymous, Fri 28 Nov 2014
Scam still happening, today with Italian with boot full of "Armani" goods asking directions on West Bound fuel area.
David, Fri 28 Nov 2014
Dear Ms Dickis, Several signs were put up in the car park warning customers about this in October. Unfortunately as you can read from the comments these incidents are mostly happening in the evening. I will review where we can put additional signage in the main building. If you wish to discuss further please feel free to contact myself on email@example.com.
Brynn Hewitt, Sun 23 Nov 2014
We were also flagged down by the man in the White Toyota with the same story - from Germany on business, lost wallet and no petrol. Also tried to give us jewellery but we refused so he gave us his business card with same name (he was not of Caucasian descent). Sadly we were good Samaritans and parted with our hard earned money to help him out.
Anonymous, Sun 23 Nov 2014
So, Mr Manager, the promised signage never went up. I am disgusted. Look how many more people have been conned. I expect an email from you to explain yourself.
Sue Dicki s, Thu 20 Nov 2014
Was flagged down on the M4 by a motorist in a white Toyota Avensis. He claimed to be a German businessman late for an important meeting who had run out of fuel. He stripped himself of jewelry as deposit against the £40 he said he needed (looked worthless to me, so I didn't accept it).
Passed me a business card with the name Kadir Ibrahim.
Gave him the £40 but heard nothing since. Have since discovered this is a common scam. There's a CrimeStopper's number, so will phone it through in the meantime.
Damian, Sat 8 Nov 2014
In relation to the on going scam at the motorway services two femalse have been arrested please see the link to the press relase.http://www.thamesvalley.police...
If you believe you ahve been scammed by these two females please contact me via the non emergency enquiry centre on 101 and we will investigate these crimes for you.
Marc Robinson P1946, Fri 7 Nov 2014
Approached by same female, same story on Sat, 1st Nov. Very plausible, we gave her £20. Realised immediately we had been conned and drove around car park looking for her but she had disappeared! Agree management should take some action to stop this.
Eileen Johnson, Wed 5 Nov 2014
We were also conned by this woman on Sat, 1st Nov, around lunchtime. Late 20s, dark hair, nicely spoken, very plausible. Sister left bag on top of car somewhere, she had no money/cards with her, etc. Had to get back to Cardiff, hated asking for help, never done it before! Anyway we eventually gave her £20 and she quickly disappeared. We immediately realised we had been conned & drove around car park twice but no sign of her. She gave her mobile phone number so we could let her have add to return the cash but it always goes to voicemail! Surprise! Agree something should be done by management to stop this.
I was approached by the same woman yesterday at about 11.30 pm. Exactly the same story. Travelling to Cardiff etc etc. I was not as savvy as some of you and parted with £20. She was driving a silver Peugeot '12 plate ending JJO.
Anonymous, Wed 5 Nov 2014
woman approached my vehicle while I was sitting eating a late lunch. She told me she needed money as she had left her purse on the roof of her car. She was heading to Wales to visit her Grandparents who both suffer from Alzheimers. Her Parents were holidaying in the Bahamas. She had no one else to ask and had spent ages plucking up the courage to ask me. I offered to make some calls to her Bank and the Police but she said she had already tried and both had refused to help. I told her perhaps a few years ago I may have helped but now, with so many scams going on, Im not prepared to part with my hard earned cash. She walked away very quickly.

exact thing happened to me on the A1 south bound slip road from the Baldock Services... thought i was helping... cost me £20!! almost to the letter as well..!!
A.RiteMug, Mon 3 Nov 2014
I was conned too! A well dressed, dark haired lady gave me the same story - purse left on top of her car; sister driving. No petrol. Reckoned a kind hearted person had siphoned £6.50 worth of petrol into her car but not enough to get to Cardiff plus the toll fee. She offered me her vehicle registration documents, her address but I said as long as she was genuine I was happy to help her. She reassured me and I gave her £20. There's no fool like an old fool.
Judy Young, Mon 3 Nov 2014
Woman asked me for money last night as she'd left her wallet on top of her car and couldn't get petrol. Her pretend crying was so bad alarm bells started ringing immediately and I'm usually a soft touch. Only googled this morning to see it's a regular scam. I was on my own, 9 o'clock at night with two small children, I won't stop here again.

Just saw 29OCT14 0930 the same scam that almost happened to me 2-3 months ago. M40 entry High Wycombe East going towards London. A black car in the slip road, Eastern European/Turkish probably, a small white guy, black hair, heavy build waving and stopping a car. His mates are in the black car couple of meters behind him. They pretend to be car import/exports and need to go back to Dover (this was his story he told me last time). They offer you jewelry for cash. Don't fool for them !!!! Drive on and report to the police.
Paul Dickons, Wed 29 Oct 2014
We just potentially got scammed, within 10 mins i rang non emergency police so hopefully they may have been caught...you never know!! Tall slim dark haired woman smelling of cigarettes Same sob story re:fuel for her and her 'sister' with short blonde hair in a silver peugot going to cariff Dont get sucked in! But i agree signage would be useful

To the lady who left her purse in a cubicle at the services, on the morning of Saturday 11th October London Bound. I have handed it in to the lost property. Call Reading Services site lost property and you should be able to retrieve your property.

We run a facebook group to raise awareness of scam artists in Reading called 'Scam / con artists in Reading' there should be signs up warning people.

My wife and i stopped in the services on saturday the 4th october ,after flying into Gatwick that morning, we decided to stop off on our way home to South Wales... The breakfast choice was quite good and reasonably priced ,but once having got our food we then had to queue to order tea/coffee for over 10 mins which left our food cold and unpalatable. Having raised this with the Costa coffee staff ,who to be fair were completley overworked and under staffed .The tables in the eating area were all full of used plates/cutlery etc,and we had to clear a table to be able to sit and eat our now cold food !!.With no cleaning staff on hand nor supervisory staff to raise our concern ,we left the food and went to Greggs for a warm bacon bap and hot cuppa. I`d be grateful of a response from MOTO management and some possible compensation for our poor food and dirty /messy eating area.

Not again?!! The manager assured me that the signs I requested after my encounter with this woman, would be put up.
Sue Dickins, Thu 2 Oct 2014
We stopped at the Motorhome rest area last night,28th Sept.A lady approached the drivers window and told my wife her husband had had his wallet stolen and needed to get money for petrol to get home.Stupidly,in hindsight ,my wife gave her ten pounds. She was 30 ish ,hair tied back and well spoken.Looking at this website it seems you know about her.Maybe some publicity around the services would be a good idea ??
Clive Lecoche, Mon 29 Sep 2014
im sorry to hear another kind- hearted traveller has been fleeced by this heartless woman. I hope everyone who has been thus duped has contacted the Police, The Reading Chronicle and the Service Station manager as I have. I have insisted that the manager put up warning signs in the car park and Station. The woman is well known to the employees - and was actually arrested a week ago.
Sue Dickins, Tue 23 Sep 2014
lol cant believe i have fallen for this scam,i was parked in the service area and a lady ide say middle to late twenty's blondish short hair asked me for money, said she was on her way to Frome lost her purse,a great actor even turned on the water works,so i gave her some cash £20,good deed for the day lol.until i read it on here i was convinced, said her name was Kate a small dark blue car i think might have been a RenaultWATCH OUT
Richard, Tue 23 Sep 2014
a very nice girl saying her name was Kate came over to my car and said she'd left her purse at a funeral of a friend and had run out of petrol. I gave her £30. I'm just a kind hearted mug.
Sue Dickins, Sun 21 Sep 2014
Thanks to your help this person was arrested this week at Reading services. If you do encounter anyone asking for money please report it immediateley to either site staff so we can remove them or phone the police. Thank you for your support. Reading Services Mgt

I also was confronted by this lady claiming that she and her husband had left a service station earlier that morning, where he had mistakenly left his wallet on the roof of their car, they were on route to Cardiff airport to pick up some elderly relatives, and they would then make a return journey to Heathrow to fly off for a few weeks holiday, She was very apologetic for asking for cash, when I questioned her about what Service station she had visited she could not answer me, I became very suspicious of her at this stage, I questioned her a little while longer and she became very anxious, she then left us and moved onto her next victim. At these same Services a few years ago there was a gang of men selling fake watches. The Service station manager should be made to get rid of these people prying on unsuspecting motorists.
Terrance L, Fri 19 Sep 2014
I too was confronted by this Charlotte woman and the mug that I am gave her £30. She told me that her partner had left his wallet and mobile phone on top of the car and had lost it and they had to get back to South End on Sea. A load of lies, She gave me two addresses and two phone numbers and both false. This was at 21.55 on Sunday the 15th of September. I really think this woman needs reporting to the police and stopped.
Tony Warren, Tue 16 Sep 2014
10.30pm Friday 5th. We were just scammed and kicking ourselves having googled once we got in the car. She even asked for a cigarette even tho she said she was 3 months pregnant. We refused. Gave her £20 which will hopefully go towards denistry!Charlotte Louise is her name, apparently.Avoid!

At 11:15 on Tuesday night on 26 August, tired and lost with a failed satnav and no mobile battery we pulled into Reading services for a sleep before heading to Devon from Heathrow. We did not feel safe with the company of some of the other service station users so moved our car to a quieter spot. Immediately we were accosted by this same slight dark haired English speaking woman with hair in a pony tail. Her obvious tale of woe was so laboured. I was reluctant to even open my window a tiny bit as I was expecting an accomplice to attack us any minute. This woman obfuscated and refused to tell us her real agenda until I forced it out of her. We then sent her on her way. I have reported it to Action Fraud. What really ticks me off is that she is a regular and it appears that nothing is being done to arrest her? Please don't tell me that the service station manager is not aware of her. Service stations in general and the companies that have concessions within them make a fortune out of us weary travellers and we are totally exploited and they know it. It is about time they offered a complete and extensive security 24/7 and links direct to the local neighbourhood police so that scammers like this do not have free regin to run their lucrative sideshows and fleece money from unsuspecting travellers. I do hope she is eventually caught. PLEASE BEWARE OF THE BIG BAD WOOLF AND LOCK YOUR DOORS
Mrs Jackman, Fri 29 Aug 2014
We stopped off on our way home from Somerset and were approached by this woman who fed us the same sob story about needing fuel and husband forgotten wallet etc etc they had to get to Southend to collect in laws then get to Heathrow. We didn't buy her story one bit ad told her we had used up the last of our money (which we had) and couldn't help . She then made a move on another caravanner and as quickly as she appeared she disappeared. Long dark hair tied back, skinny, wearing a long dark coat.
Laura, Wed 27 Aug 2014
Myself and mu husband were also approached by this dark haired women. Yet again claiming she had no petrol and husband had left wallet at home. Definate scam!! Please do not give this women money!! Story just doesnt add up.

Arrived at the services at 8.45 on a Saturday morning only to be told they'd run out of breakfast and it would be at least 15 mins till any more dishes would be available. Appalling service not at all what I expect from Moto. Forced to wait another hour for breakfast at another service station on them M25

Just a note on the dark haired, well spoken lady scamming people for money at Reading Services. I've spoken to her once earlier this year and she tried the same thing again last night. Luckily I'm naturally suspicious. Still working, be aware !!!
Tim, Wed 6 Aug 2014
Unfortunately like Matt N on the 17TH July 2014 I was approached by the same woman telling me exactly the same sob story about how she and her husband had just filled up with petrol and had left their wallet at home, being a soft idiot I parted up with £20 which I will never see again. Other users of this service station beware it is not a nice feeling to be conned.
A Mug, Sun 20 Jul 2014
Well it's seems Charlotte Harper was out and about at reading services south bound last night (17th July 2014). We pulled over as our baby was crying so I was standing near the grass verge with our baby when this lady came over and said she was very embarrassed for asking but they've just got some fuel and her and her husband have left their wallets at home and they need some cash for the fuel so they can get to Cardiff to pick their friend up to go to the airport. She said hello to our baby and told us her name. She kept saying how sorry she was for asking and she would pay it back if we give her out derails. She put on a really great act. After I said no and shook my head her phone immediately rung and she started looking around and heading straight over to someone else parking up. As she was walking away I asked her why didn't she just speak to BP and ask for a form so they can pay it back, she said service stations won't do that, not sure how true that is but alarm bells started ring when I asked where her husband was parked and she said he was stuck at the fuel pump in a white audi. We drove past the BP on the way out and there was no audi, not even a white car. The husband is obviously sitting in the car park watching people pull in and sending her over. She's fairly tall, brown/black tied back hair, middle aged with bad teeth. Please don't fall for this act. Awful woman trying to scam a young couple with a crying baby

Dear Wendy Sutton, Apologies for the condition you found the toilets on your visit. I will ensure I discuss your comments with our cleaning team and repair any maintenance issues found. I hope your next visit is better. General Manager

I used Moto Reading services today and was so disgusted with the state of the ladies' toilets that I am urged to comment. They were not only dirty but in a bad state of repair and the bins were overflowing.

on Saturday 22nd March , I stopped off at Gordano service station on M5 on my way to Cardiff. Anyway , a guy carrying a large rucksack asked me for a lift to Birmingham.I told him I was going to Cardiff. He said he was 6 days there - couldn't get a lift. He said he'd come with me to Magor services. this guy was slight frame ,about 5ft 5, very short hair.As we got chatting , he told me that - he had been on holiday in Bavaria and got beaten unconscious by 3 albanians - had everything stolen - passport etc , he signed himself out of hospital came back to Birmingham - then went to Bideford in Devon to get his birth cert as he needed it to get a western union transfer of 2k sent to him by his brother in Saudi Arabia. He told me that he hadn't eaten in 6 days , asked me if I was interested in Formula 1 racing , - I was wondering where this was leading. Turns out his job was a chef on an executive boat based in the Carabean , as the yacht would be in Monacco for the race , he offered to put me up as his guest. He did have some knowledge of Devon but when I mentioned Exford , he said he'd never heard of it. The whole story sounded like a con but he made it very believable . At Magor , I offered to buy him food but he said he'd rather cash. I gave him 30 pounds. It' only when I googled 'motorway' conman I came across the story dated 4th Feb 2014. I'm posting as a 'watch-out' to would be do-gooders.

RE Paul JamesDitto Ben's comments of 22nd Feb, these exactly match my story .... to say I feel stupid is an understatement, he got £150 from me on 18th March ... more fool me! To all, please be advised that this crook seems to be working out of Taunton Deane services on the M5 also. IF anyone has more news about this person i.e. someone does catch him, then please leave a note on this site. I have no reason to expect my money to be returned, only that justice might be done.Andy
Anonymous, Thu 20 Mar 2014
I have also encountered the same individual, Paul James. My instincts told me it was a scam but it was cleverly done and I agree with another post on this site, he is working with someone else. Anyway, like everyone else I feel stupid at having been taken in and giving him money. I was heading westbound on 19th March 2014 and live in Cornwall, so recognising the accent (it seemed genuine)and wishing to help someone out in distress I drove him from services between J26 and J27 to J28 (Cullumpton). It is a shame that departing for once from my normal cynical views that I should be made to look so gullible.I am not dwelling on it either and will not let it stop me from random acts of kindness. I would like to see the person face justice at the hands of the police and will be reporting it to the police nearest Cullumpton. Hope this thread helps confirm that Paul James is a serial predator on motorists on the M5 and helps people avoid this scam.
Robert Grant, Wed 19 Mar 2014
The person involved in this scam was arrested at Leigh Delamere West a few weeks ago and is under police investigation.
Drew, Sun 23 Feb 2014
RE: Paul James
I encountered this individual on 16 Feb 14, on the East bound slip road of the M32/ M4 junction. He was wearing heavy duty clothing and a high-vis vest carrying a 5L green petrol can.6'2"/6'3" black greying hair, seemed to have gammy leg as he had a limp, spoke with a Cornish accent and indeed said he was from St Just, Penzance and was a stone mason. Mother and Father apparently run a B&B in St Just. His vehicle a Land Rover towing a trailer of stone had broken down having run out of fuel. The bill to recover him to his home address was substantial, and could I lend him sufficient fuel money to get home. He had locked the PIN on his debit card and was therefore unable to pay himself. The recovery firm wanted the payment up front before they would move him as he was not a member.
He comes across very genuine and I suspect he is not at this scam alone as he was called whilst I was giving him a lift and proceeded to talk through his predicament apparently to a colleague. I could over hear another voice on the mobile he was using. I genuinely thought I was helping this chap out, I lent him some money having exchanged details. I did feel some what 50/50 about the whole thing however this toe-rag as I have said comes across as very genuine, and his story is convincing. The money never materialised and having chased him up eventually the mobile number I had went dead. I felt suitably stupid for a while but decided I had better things to do than to dwell on this. Indeed it was less the loss of some cash, more the being scammed by this weasel. I indeed hope that the details I have given assist in the arrest of this individual or make others aware of the yarn he will spin in order to achieve his scam. From what I have pieced together this past week he has been working the M4 corridor for sometime.

Dear General Manager,I've already sent 3 emails to the email address you supply below providing exact times and I've had no response. Plus you can see my email address whenever I post on here. I get the distinct feeling you're not really that interested in doing anything about this, otherwise I would have already got a response.

Dear all, If you are able to provide me with exact times and dates or if anyone has his license plate we may be able to use our ANPR to stop him. Please contact me on email@example.com with any details you have. Please put for the address of the General Manager as a title.
General Manager, Thu 13 Feb 2014
Also can anyone confirm whether this guy going by the name of Paul James had a regional accent? He told me that he was from Cornwall and spoke to me in a Cornish accent. Trying to work out whether that was genuine or just for my vw campervan's sake. Fair chance he'll already have form and be on the Police system and even though I'm not Cornish my Dad did live there for 10 years and we know a lot of people in that part of the world, including a good few people in the Police.
Anyone who's been scammed by him keep checking in on here because I personally and the Police are looking into this and he did make a few stupid mistakes with me inc his face being caught on camera.
Anyway, as I say any details you can provide that may verify facts/ put certain thing in doubt would be much appreciated.
This guy took advantage me when I was on the way back from visiting my seriously ill Dad and was a bit more emotional than normal. He's really slick, I do feel stupid admittedly, but I'm also not going to let a weasel like him sent my faith in humanity. I'm 36 and have had my own business for years and been working in my family business for even longer. I trade with people in countries all over the world both face to face and over the net and have visited some of the toughest places on the planet, never until last Sunday have I ever been duped like this by anyone. This guy's very good a what he does, it took me a day to stop kicking myself but don't dwell on it too much.
I've got my adrenaline pumping about finding out who this guy is how and seriously reckon I can do it. We'll never get our money back, but a lesson needs to be taught and we need to stop him praying on others. Let's get him to court (if the guys from my Dad's haulage company don't find out who he is first) and then I'll have his true name and address.
Any info please post up here.
Whilst stopping at Reading on 08/02/2014 I Snagged a brand new jumper on a very sharp screw in a toilet cubicle, it was obvious that someone had screwed something to the opposite side of the wall and not bothered to check it safe the other side which of course it wasn't, and as annoying that it is that my new jumper is ruined it may well of taken a nasty gash from someone's arm or toddlers face so I reported it to the duty manager (or who I was led to believe was the duty manager) A. Razna who took all my details, home address telephone numbers and email promising that I would get a call the following day,4 days later and I'm still waiting, surprise surprise a response would be great
Mrs M Worsfold, Wed 12 Feb 2014
I too have come across this man going by the name of Paul James. Unlucky for him I have a vast network of connections in various industries and have people using this motorway on a daily basis. I've more money than sense I guess and he targeted me thinking I'm some middle class hippy wannabe, but books and covers and all that. He's severely misjudged this one and I love a good old game of cat and mouse. Was 50/50 whether he was a swindler or not but thought it would be easy enough to find him anyway.
I have an expensive 60's VW camper and unlucky for him I had a cameras fitted inside and out after someone tried to steal it to order a few years back. I also had the foresight to take a photo of his credit card on my phone and more importantly his thumb. I have contacts in the right places to put this information to good use.
If anyone has got any other details please post them up here. It'll be even easier to track him then. The money is already written off, but he's tested my faith in people and on principle I can guarantee you he is getting what's coming to him.
Trust me, he will get what's coming to him. He's targeted the wrong guy this time.
Matt, Tue 11 Feb 2014
oh my god i met paul james , he seemd a nice guy and he told me his story and i lent him £150 to get petrol to get home. I cant believe i didnt check up on him more. anyway amazing he continues to get away with it.

Met Paul James in August 2013 at Leigh Delamare Services. He had his fuel can and his story about having broken down. He showed me his broken debit card in his name. His arm was in a plaster cast after he claimed that he had been involved in a road traffic collision. He took calls from the 'Police and Highways Agency' in my presence and I gave him £20 for fuel after his convincing tale of woe and then drove him to Membury Services. Can't believe I was taken in!
JG, Wed 5 Feb 2014
A couple of weeks ago I was sat in my car eating my lunch at the west bound reading services. A woman in her fourties and a younger lady in her late teens/early twenties, posing as mother and daughter, pulled up next to me and motioned for me to lower my window. The woman was close to tears and gave me a story of how she had no money/cards on her and her father was in hospital in a critical condition. She asked me for help with petrol money. I didn't really click, highly unusual but I did give her all the change I could pull together. It's an incident that has stuck in my mind and having seen the other posts on this website I believe I have been misled. If any of the management team at Moto Reading would like further details then please get in touch.

I met Paul today. I really wanted him to be genuine but sadly he wasn't. Karma.

I too met Paul James 17/1/14 junction M 32 M4 East. Dropped himat Leigh Delamare. He gave the story of running out of fuel and not being able to pay for fuel. He was very convincing hence me parting with cash. Thought I was doing a good deed , feel rather mad !! His time will come. Be warned
Brian, Fri 17 Jan 2014
My husband has just met a Paul James - on M4 slip road with petrol can - in rain - as he got in his mobile rang and he replied as if itwas the motorway police to whom he explains that he is on his way to cornwall - has run out of petrol as his bank card did not work (forgot PIN?) and will be orgainising a tow for £850 when he can get to the service station (Leigh Delamere) My husband lends him money for the petrol - which is promised to pay back (so takes bank details address etc) so to save Mr James the large towing bill. The money has not be repaid yet.
Jill, Fri 17 Jan 2014
Another tale of the infamous Paul James!
I am the last victim of the fuel money scam run buy this man on the M4 corridor. I picked up 'Paul James' after he was waiving down cars with a petrol can at junction 19 on the M4, he proceeded to embellish in a story that his land rover had run out of fuel, and the RAC were charging him £870 to get towed home. Bearing in mind this was New Years Eve! I stupidly fell for this mans story and offered to lend him fuel money to get home, to save him paying the towing charge. I will not say how much I lent him as it is some what embarrassing!
As this is a reoccurring incident clearly this man is known to the police and to the service stations in the area, I would like his scamming mug 'face' pictured around the services all over the area, so this does not happen again to another caring individual.
I understand this is a difficult thing for the service stations to deal with, and it will always be happening but PLEASE anything you can do to make others aware of this scam, this man, or any others like him would be beneficial to all.
Happy new year, Tom

My partner and I were scammed by the same woman scammer at Reading services at night in early November. We were on our way back from Dover to Gloucestershire and were told the same story about a lost wallet, a journey back to Cardiff, etc. We both handed over cash and address only to realise some time later that we'd been scammed. Can't believe that it's happened to so many people and apparently not been sorted out over several months.

i had just flown in from the EU and stopped for a coffee. i have to say that we are so far behind the costa coffee west bound it was a disgrace filthy poor coffee, we went up for food no choice left at 2.15 in the afternoon on a sat so we went to W H Smith for some dunkin donuts of the stand, nothing to pick up the food so who had touched it no tongs no nothing. we are 10 days away from xmas and not a light or decoration to be seen. if that is all you can do i tell you know i would pack it in as a poor job

Facebook group created to try to catch the female con artist who has forgotten her purse - please search for 'Female con artist / woman scam in Reading' on facebook - she approached me yesterday outside Reading train station and I remembered her two years ago in Emmer Green with a different story, same person - brunette, hair tied back, well spoken, well dressed, feels really bad for asking, offers to take your address to pay you back. After posting in Caversham Gossip Girls I found 20 people also conned and all different parts of Reading I found she has also been scamming for petrol money at the services. So please join this facebook group if you have been scammed to share information on her and build a dossier of evidence. Thanks.

After travelling back from my brothers funeral i stopped by reading services for a coffee. Only to be Scammed. The woman who was on her way To Cardif with her Husband, who lost his wallet and ran out of Petrol. I fell for it hook line and Sinker. fair to say i was caught out having just buried my 35 year old Brother. The woman is about 5ft 8inches Slim to medium build. She is very convincing with such a sob story. Approx 2 days later i went back to the Services and there she was again. She got dropped off in a Red Focus. I followed the Focus who then sat in the garage (prob waiting for the Scumbag of a woman to finish her scams. I have now got photographs and Video which i have passed on to the Police. So look out for a Red Focus that sits in the Garage whilst the Woman Scams. At night .

Stopped here in the half term week, my four year old was hungry. My husband and I opted for two very small breakfast and my daughter had a child's meal. The meal they advertised was not what she receive and the breakfast was substandard at best. I telephoned many times and spoke to Tara and Rebecca, both whom were to get the General Manager to call me back. Two weeks later I'm still waiting. Keep driving past would save yourself a horrible experience.

Reading ServicesI have recently had a baby and needed to use the baby services avaliable. i was pointed in the direction of the microwave in the baby food warming area, by a very rude member of staff from the coffee/baguette shop! Firstly the area was FILTHY!!! Rubbish everywhere, dry food stuck on the surface! it was disgusting! Then i opened the microwave. I have never seen such FILTH it was awful!! This is suppose to be a baby food preparation area! i would NEVER put my babys bottle in there!!! I went back over to the shop and asked the lady for some hot water, she refused and pointed to the microwave. i explained how filthy it was and she said "well i have things to do, not to give you hot water", speak to manager! Eventualy i was given hot water and a lovely dirty look. Thanks! I am a regular user of the services and have never had such an awful experience. NOT baby friendly at all.

Have just visited these Motorway services 29/10/13 WHAT a disgrace!! after being over charged over £17.00 for two breakfasts and two drinks we expected at least something we could eat, No it was dried out beans you could have used as bullets asked for tom sauce and they did not have any, no coke in machine so tried orange and that came out hot! yes hot not warm or cold as it should have been, staff who were not English were having trouble understanding what we were saying, by now I was starting to simmer, all I wanted was some edible food to eat one lad/boy, ran next door to burger king and got some tom sauce for us.All in all this place should not be serving food especially going by the previous comments, and what I saw, dirty floors/table (thank god I had some antiseptic wipes} I am a cook and I know for a fact this place would be shut down for hygine reasons and lack of staff training. So how about a refund then??
Elaine Sloman, Mon 4 Nov 2013
We regularly use Reading services on a Friday night on our regular journeys to London. This evening although it was very quiet ,the toilets were absolutely disgusting. Screwed up toilet paper all over the floor and in the sinks, there wasn't a clean cubicle and even used sanitary wear on the floor in one I entered and they stank. There was nobody around to complain too either. I was so disgusted I felt I had to write this. We have always used these services as they are normally of a very high standard and we will use them once more in case it was a one off, but having read recent reviews I feel that this probably isn't the case, overall cleanliness is slipping.
J Perdrisat, Sat 2 Nov 2013
We are regular travellers to London and always stop at Reading services to use the toilets and buy something to eat and drink. We have used many services along the way but have always rated Reading to be one of the best for cleanliness. We have just stopped there tonight about 7.30 pm and although it was very quiet, the ladies toilets were absolutly disgusting and they stank. There was toilet paper on the floors in almost every cubicle, even used sanitary wear was in 1 cubicle I entered. There was screwed up toilet paper In the sinks and no attendant to be seen anywhere. I was so disgusted I had to complain. I will use them again next time as I hope this was a one off incident.

Last night (31/10/2013) we stopped at Reading services, a very convincing woman told us her partner had lost his wallet and that they were trying to get to Cardiff. They needed fuel and the toll fee for the bridge. She gave an address in Cardiff and promised to send a cheque. Having read comments, I will now be very surprised if we receive anything from her.
She gave her name as Charlotte Harper, but the address she gave is suspect, as the postcode is not recognised. It is early days yet but, having read remarks on http://www.motorwayservices.in..., I am pretty sure this is the same woman as others have been fooled by.
Management REALLY SHOULD PUT UP WARNING SIGNS that scammers are operating in the area. This matter will be reported to the police in the morning.

Dear J Holt, Thank you for your comments, I will contract our pest controller to increase traps in this area. Regards General manager

We stopped in the Reading services west bound on our way home. We parked M&S end in the caravan parking area. The time was 5.15pm we were shocked and disgusted to see around ten rats in the bins and scuttling between the bushes on either side of the parking area. We reported the issue to a member of staff in M&S but they weren't that bothered.
J Holt, Thu 31 Oct 2013
Let's be honest. Your company policy is for all helmets to be removed for security reasons. You want a face shot for your cctv in case of bilking. The "sale of petrol to under 16's" rule is just a convenient way to justify it. I ride a 1000cc bike and I'm a mature rider. A 16 year old would not be on such a bike.I dont have any problem with my local petrol station, even when filling up late at night...because the guy has some common sense. Im not in a track suit, trainers & riding a moped.I almost always remove my helmet when inside the store (as I usually buy a coffee and snacks) I didnt in this instance as I found your staff's "request" insulting. As it is we risk leaving our bags and valubles on the bike for anyone to snatch. All us bikers ask for is a dry, secure shelf/locker to place our lid and personal effects. How about a dedicated m/bike pump? If you have a company suggestion box, when not put it forward to head office? I tend to avoid petrol stations once I've been asked to remove my lid and this will now also be true of Reading. As you can see by the other bikers comments, this is a huge bone of contention amongst riders.
Jon, Wed 30 Oct 2013
Dear Mr Sheehan, I apologise about spelling your name wrong. Although we do not have pre pay at Reading the same rule should apply. We would always be respectful of peoples religious beliefs. If you feel you would like to discuss the matter further please feel free to contact me on e-mail address firstname.lastname@example.org, please address FAO the general manager.
General manager, Wed 30 Oct 2013
Mr General Manager, I am also a biker that gets frustrated with having to remove my helmet. Does the same LEGAL requirement apply to those who have religious beliefs and are not asked to remove their face covering? or is that all of a sudden not a legal requirement anymore??!
ANON, Wed 30 Oct 2013
Dear Mr General Manager. Thanks for spelling my name wrong. Can I use the prepay without removing my helmet? As clearly a 16 year old wouldn't have a bank card?
Anonymous, Tue 29 Oct 2013
Dear Mr Sheenhan, We have a legal duty to ensure we do not sell fuel to under 16 year olds. They should have also asked you to remove your balaclava. The same rule applies for car drivers. I hope this answers your question.
General manager, Tue 29 Oct 2013
Dear Mr Poole. I was sorry to hear you did not recieve your products. if you send me your address to e-mail email@example.com I will send you a full refund. If you address it for the attention of the general manager.
General Manager, Tue 29 Oct 2013
Why do petrol companies still insist with refusing to serve motorcyclists unlesss they remove their helmet!? I stopped yesterday afternoon as was told I had to remove my lid before filling up. I asked the cashier and she said it was for cctv/security reasons. I spoke to her whilst wearing a balaclava! Its inconvenient to have to remove our helmets as a) the floor is wet/covered in petrol spills b) the only other option we have is to balance it on the seat whilst filling up and are they are bloody expensive to replace it you drop it. You then have to carry it, along with your gloves, wallet, keys etc. Its just so pointless, not to mention discriminatory. Im sure you've a nice pre-written reply supplied by head office, who dont really give a monkeys, but you've non idea how infuriating this is to bikers, who just like 99.9% of the rest of your customers, are honest, law abiding people.
Jon Sheehan, Mon 28 Oct 2013
I am still owed £6.50 from April 29th 2011 which was promised by the manager.
A fire drill went off seconds after my money was taken and it was never returned.
Reading services have effectively stolen my money. I was honest about the amount when I could have easily claimed for much more.
On another note, I went again another time and the food receive (about £10 worth) was of the worst quality - comments are asked for but this is just for show as nobody cares. Stay away unless you want to be fleeced.
Samuel Poole, Wed 23 Oct 2013
23 Sept 20.30 got scammed by woman calling herself Sarah Shaw from Cardiff. Lost wallet no diesel etc very convincing. Management please note put up signs to warn customers scammers are operating on your premises.
A Dennett, Sun 6 Oct 2013
Wow! Having read some of the other comments I think we had a lucky escape despite being relieved of over £8 for 2 coffees and 1 cereal bar at Costas. Daylight robbery is still in fashion it seems!
Liz, Sun 29 Sep 2013
Dear Diane, My apologies about missing your e-mail. I have responsed today. We are very keen to get all the information we can to ensure we are running a safe environment for all our customers. As you stated you will need to provide the evidence to the police. If you are still not getting any response please contact myself again and I will do all i can to help on this matter.

I contacted the general manager by email on the 7th September to let him know that I had video of the woman who is scamming people at the service station. I have a confession from her to what she is doing. I also contacted Thames Valley Police. So far, no one has got in contact with me about this. People are still being scammed, I have the evidence to catch them but no one seems to care.
Diane, Sun 22 Sep 2013
Wish I'd visited this site before just been scammed for £20 woman with sob story about no diesel husband lost wallet etc going to Cardiff.Sort it out management, can't be hard to do a undercover job on her. I will make a point of stopping hear in future to try and see her again.

Dear Lynn, We are currently in the process of updating our toilets and have recently scores ten 5 star grades and two 4 star grades from the Environmental health visits in July and August in food safety across the site.I will ensure your comments are passed onto the relevant managers so we can improve our standards.
General Manager, Wed 28 Aug 2013
We stopped here on our way back from France. Popped into petrol station for a snack & to use the toilets which I have to say were disgusting - male & female. Dreadful smell before you even opened the door & dirt on the floor that I do not even want to think abut what it was. Do not use if possible - I thought we'd contract some horrible disease from using them. Food selection limited & expensive but we'd gone off the idea of eating by this time anyway. Very disappointing after no problems with French services. These are way below European standards which have risen considerably over the years while ours have deteriorated.
a howells, Tue 27 Aug 2013
Looking at the other comments, no management in hygiene is involved here, is it driving the staff to show their own couldnt care less attitude?? Sack all the staff and close this place down before it rots in the filth!!!!Still waiting for a response from my previous comment! Are the people responsible too embarassed to reply?!!!!!!!
Lynn, Mon 26 Aug 2013
Stopped here at 4am for a quick toilet break whilst heading to London. The whole car park stank of stale urine and 3 of the toilets were clogged solid with excrement. Horrible services.
Jimbo Gardashian, Wed 21 Aug 2013
I called into this service station for deisel this morning, paid for my fuel and asked to use the toilet. I could not believe the state of all the toilets there, mens, disabled and ladies all the doors were open so was able to see into all which had paper all over the floors and the smell of urine was atrocious and quite obviously the sinks and pans had not been cleaned for some time. When I went to complain to 3 members of staff who were just stood chatting, one of the guys dressed in a brown uniform just turned and walked away without even apologising!! time to chat guys when you could have been in the customer conveniences making them acceptable, i give you an almighty BLACK MARK!! Disgusting to say the least, hope i have made my point!
Lynn, Sun 18 Aug 2013
Scammed by probably the same woman mentioned several times on this site. She asked for petrol money and was prepared to have her photo taken (which we stupidly did not do). Clearly our fault for being gullible (or overly optimistic about humanity having returned from holiday) but with the number of times this has happened I think there should be warnings posted at this services.
R Smith, Thu 8 Aug 2013
Stopped by on the Westbound services, poor selection of sandwiches at M&S(if you take the price into consideration as well)
Tried the EDC food, seemed ok from a distance. Order Cod and Chips tartar sauce cost an additional 25p a sachet!!
The Chips were mostly disgusting and dry and the batter on the Cod well, decided to leave after the second tasting, despite having quite an appetite before I got there. Flies everywhere and the place just did not smell clean.
Joe, Tue 6 Aug 2013
Stopped yesterday evening at Reading services West Bound. Eating area was full of flies as tables were not being cleared and cleaned. Food looked as if it had been around for a long time and there was only one woman serving who could barely speak English and seemed in a dream. Took about 5 minutes just to put out things like already cooked sausages and chips. Unfortunately like watching paint dry.
We often stop on the East bound side which has equally slow service, but does seem cleaner.
Deborah, Sun 28 Jul 2013
I was sorry to hear of your visit. We have provided an additional entrance from the caravan area to the lorry park if the caravan area is full so please feel free to use it. I will also follow up on the maintenance within the toilets.Thank you for your comments
General Manager, Thu 25 Jul 2013
Whenever we stop at Reading services the parking area 'reserved' for caravans is blocked by HGVs. Does anyone manage this parking? The toilets have to be the very worst maintained we have ever seen. The people hired to clean them are lazy and do not understand English. There seem to be more toilets out of order than in use and the whole place seems run down.Caravanners and motorhome drivers should avoid this stop except in an emergency.
S Matthews, Tue 23 Jul 2013
I would advise everyone not to give money to people asking at Reading services. If you are approached please ask at the main building for the duty manager and inform them you have been approached so we can resolve this issue as soon as possible. If you do have any information that may be of use please contact the police or the site at e-mail address firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you General Manager

Following on from all the comments about being scammed by a woman called Clare Finch: it looks like I was approached by the same person just a couple of miles down the road at the Madejski Stadium, in the hotel car park. A person fitting the same description as Clare Brunt in the comments below (this time calling herself Clare Brunt) asked for money to get petrol. She seemed genuinely distressed and very apologetic. I gave her 10 quid out of kindness, but took her address and phone number. Needless to say, I did not get the money back. Her address (149 Grove rd, Bracknell, Bearkshire (sic) RG7 7TP) and phone number are, of course, false.Do not give this woman any money!
R Hill, Thu 18 Jul 2013
Did a fuel stop, last week with a coach full of passages, stopped at the tuck side as it faster to fill, went in to get company credit card swapped and was told, it didnt work. The other driver with his credit card tried and was told the same. It was our fault that the cards didnt work and not the machine!! So tried a few personal credit cards and they didnt work also. We were not aloud to use any other pump, or try chip and pin!!! So we had to leave. This all looks bad in front of our passages. Had to drive down to next petrol station and all worked fine. Also phone bank and they told us that our cards where fine and it was the machine, but the girl behind counter called Anna wouldn't have it.This will be the last time I will be stopping at reading services with or without passages, and as I bring income to these areas it will be there lost, not mine.
Mark, Tue 9 Jul 2013
stopped for a quick break on our way home, what a disgusting place! ordered some food (big mistake!) disgusting, cold, over priced slop is the best way to describe it, 2 cups of tea, but no milk to be found. Sat outside where we were accompanied by overflowing bins, rubbish all over the floor and tables stacked with dirty cups and plates....... very limited staff, neither polite or helpful. If you were thinking of stopping here whilst on your travels....DON'T!!!

Reading services has to be one of the worst MSA's in the UK. I stopped there to have a coffee out of my flask whilst travelling overnight from Wales to Heathrow airport. I got there about 3am and parked on the deserted carpark enjoying my coffee whilst watching the rats cleverly sorting through the overflowing bins. I decided to go and use the toilet facilities in the building and when I got out of the car I noticed the whole area stank of stale urine. A truly depressing place and hopefully i'll never have to stop there again.
Timmy Toaster, Wed 19 Jun 2013
Why is there no defibrillator at Reading Services. It could have saved a mans life last weekend if one had been available.
Liz, Tue 18 Jun 2013
Dear Steve, If you send me your details I will be more than happy to deal with your ticket. The e-mail address is email@example.com and address it to the attention of the General Manager. Just for your infomration the motorway service stations do not recieve any income from the road tax as they are privately owned land.
General Manager, Sun 16 Jun 2013
What a disgrace! I was absolutely knackered at the end of a day (1am) and drove into Moto and parked/fell asleep for about 4 hours. 3 weeks later I get a £90 ticket for 'parking' longer than 2 hours. Let me tell Moto - I will NOT be paying. I drive through Europe and stop in the beautifully tended picnic areas, service areas or parking places. You dont pay for any place to park anywhere - it's a human right. We pay our road tax don't we - and about 10p a litre more in your service areas. I also fill up with fuel about every 2 days and often use the Moto sites. Not now - you can shove it. I will infuture pull off of the motorway and stay in a small town, fill up in a small town garage and find a local bakers nfor my lunch. WHAT A DISGRACE MOTO IS.

I was scammed by a lady called Clare Finch as reported on this website. I gave her £10 towards her petrol to Cardiff which she said she would return. She hasn't.
Before giving her the money I asked the staff if they knew of a scam and they said they didn't.
This was a lady that was white, well presented, about 5"8' with dark hair. She drove a red ford Ka and was with a chap. Someone should try and get a picture or video of her.
From what I've learnt, if you loose you wallet, the petrol station will take your licence plate and let you fill in forms to fill up. The management of the service station can also help people so just send her in there.
Before giving her money I googled "how do you buy petrol if you have forgotten your wallet". So I'm putting that in this post incase someone else does the same search…

Paid for breakfast 2 adults 3 children 23.02.12 early Saturday morning. Breakfasts were cold and our youngest child of 6 cut his mouth on egg shell left in with the fried egg. Staff struggled to hold a conversation in English and were unhelpful and just shrugged off my complaint. Had to get details from web site to complain as they could not even write down who I should contact.
I dont expect motorway service stations to win awards for food however I do expect a hot meal, and no added extras i.e egg shell especially for the price paid.

Me and my boyfriend was approached by a middle aged dark haired woman who claimed her husband had left his wallet at home and they had to get to Cardiff. Reading the comments below clearly this has happened before, she was literally in tears, asked me to come take a picture of her and her car and my adress so she could send the money back, she also asked for a ciggerette for her husband. Being nice i gave her £20 and some tobacco. She said her husband was a builder and had alot of cash but she had spent it shopping without realising he didnt have his card , she looked very posh, very well dressed, very well spoken, she apparently attended a 99th birthday party. i didnt check what car she had as she seemed lovely. Clearly been scammed but anyway its only £20, im going to heaven. she is going to hell, Karma's a bitch and she deserves to get hit by a car :)

The guy who was reported scamming people for money for fuel last summer is still doing it. He conned me out of quite a lot of cash with a very convincing story line and back story. I have tried getting through to the police on 101 but can never get through. Beware, this guy has been doing this for a long time and is a very good con man

Warning - petrol scam. Young woman in 30s Irish accent, heavy fake tan, dark hair, blue velour track suit. Claimed to have left card at home. I paid for Diesel. Moto have CCTV of her filling up and of me paying! This was on 20.01.13. So far the text I sent asking for repayment has been replied to, saying looks like you have wrong number. When I return from holiday I will report to Police and guide them to earlier comments. Such a shame, a good deed gets a slap in the face! I hope Moto put a sign up warning against this scam.
Ashton, Tue 22 Jan 2013
On 20.01.13, I appear to have been scammed. I paid for a full tank of diesel for a young woman. Possibly in her thirties, had a mild Irish accent, very strong fake tan, dark hair and was wearing a blue velour track suit. She claimed to have left her cards at home. I was having a very bad day and have in the past, forgotten my wallet, only realising after I had filled my tank with fuel, in my defence it was shortly after I had had a baby and my mind was elsewhere. I was treated with trust at that time and I did come back and pay within a week. I was given name and address and contact details by this woman, I've just sent a text to the number given and the reply was - I think you have the wrong number. There is CcTV footage at the service station, both of them filling up and of me paying. When I get back from my holiday I will contact the Police and report this to them, I also have 3 staff as witnesses who will confirm that she did indeed agree to pay me back. I will point the Police to this site and also ask Motto to put a sign up! I don't feel naive, because if I hadn't helped and this person truly needed my help, I would have felt like I had let humanity down. As it happens, she has let humanity down. Shame on her!
I think it is high time someone from environmental health visited Reading services - including the BP garage. I stopped here on a business trip with a colleague and was totally shocked by the lack of cleanliness. The toilets were filthy and clearly hadn't been cleaned in a long time and I doubt properly ever. i have taken photos and reported this to the appropriate authorities.I have just returned from Spain where service stations were immaculate. Indeed I travel for business in the UK and abroad regularly and have never experienced anything as bad as Reading Services. Please respond.
Mrs SM Lane, Sun 20 Jan 2013
Stopped at reading services West bound January 6th approximately 2pm. I had to refrain from using the female toilets due the dirty state and smell coming from them. My husband purchased a coffee for each of us whilst I purchased two toasties from Costa and waited for them to be cooked, the table my husband found for us was dirty and he requested it be cleaned, the dish cloth used was disgusting! By 8pm that night both of us had unbearable stomach cramps and chronic diarrhoea! After three days of suffering we visited a GP surgery as visiting patients, tests were carried out by local health authorities and it was confirmed that we had contracted Salmonella, this could have only been due to eating at the service station mentioned as we did not call anywhere else and left others at home perfectly well!Needless to say we will never call at services again! Wake up Enviromental Health and do some spot checks!
Mr and Mrs E Brown, Thu 17 Jan 2013
1. On entering the services for the toilets, we discovered the disabled toilet locked. There was no notice as to where to locate the key. My mother, therefore, was not able to use this facility - a critical issue.2. In the main ladies' toilets, I had to use a toilet with no toilet seat on it. My mother had to cope with no disabled facilities of any kind. 3. In the section of the toilets where I was, two out of three hand dryers were not working.4. Soap dispensers in the toilets were not working. Temporary dispensers were placed on the equivalent of j-cloths for users and were messy, dribbling and hardly hygienic.5. We ordered a coffee and a cake, and took ourselves to a table. The table was not wiped; it was sticky and unacceptable.6. The floor in the eating area was dirty, littered with crumbs and redundant packaging. All in all, a very disappointing service in all aspects.
Jill Silverthorne, Wed 9 Jan 2013
Just stopped at Reading Eastbound for a breakfast. While my husband waited for our breakfasts I joined the only till open which was the Costa (lotta) counter. One person was serving and 5people were waiting, each drink takes ages to make so we waited for a long time-others came to serve but it made little difference as they were all waiting to use the same coffee machine. By the time we paid and received our drinks our breakfasts were disgustingly cold,if we hadn't been in a hurry I would have returned them. What a ridiculous system, why weren't the checkout tills open. At least we could have had a self service drink and hot breakfasts. Will I return? I don't think so!
Janet Jones, Fri 9 Nov 2012
If it is any comfort to John g and David jones, I gave the guy more than they did. I suspected a scam at the time, but still gave him the benefit of the doubt. Cleverly, he replied to my phone calls over the next few days, telling me he was putting a cheque in the post, and even describing the weather in Cornwall at the time ... This delaying tactic meant he could carry on scamming others whilst I waited.... And waited.others beware ... The scam took place in broad daylight right in front of the main building, where I would have thought there would be security cameras and security guards

Had a Coffee from Costa and a sandwich for M&S
Thought they were both okay
tim harrison, Tue 9 Oct 2012
We stopped at Reading Services eastbound this morning 6th Oct. Saw Costa which I call Cost a Fortune and avoid like the plague. Went opposite where there was a self service area which I now think to my cost was also Costa. Had two bacon and egg rolls served by a foreign girl, Eastern European I think, who I had difficulty undertstanding. Cost £10 and then ordered two cups of tea total cost over £14. The cups were Costa coffee cups, thick and not nice to drink out of a quite shallow, few mouthfuls and cost over £2 per cup. FIRST AND LAST TIME, WHAT A RIP OFF!!!
Ingrid Ransome, Sun 7 Oct 2012
Identical scam as David Jones suffered. Guy with arm in plaster claiming that his Land Rover had broken down and was in need of fuel to return to St Austell and had been quoted £870 for recovery from the M4 Membury Services. Had a broken credit card in name of Paul James.Took various phone calls from Highways Agency and AA whilst in my car during journey.Gave him £20 like an idiot. Would like to see him again!
John G, Fri 21 Sep 2012
A dead rat had been crushed in the road, pasties were old reheated crud charged at £4.19, coffee was stale tasting. This page is litany of bad reviews for reading services and the loing and short of it is they don't give the smallest piece of rodents crap. It is a goldmine for them and they shamelessly exploit it. Avoid this service station at all costs it is an overpriced dump, like modst other service stations.
There are like 3 in the whole country I would recommend. I wonder why these people hate us so much. I try and bring a packed lunch and I would advise everyone else to and i would advise them to park in the trailer or overflow car park which is less like a zoo and has a little shade from the sun so you can have half hours kip, not that they want you to. It's a surprise they dont have a tannoy yelling to everyone that "We have had your money , now fuck off!"
Jam, Wed 19 Sep 2012
hi the service i receive at the service station at 6am yesterday morning was dreadful, i only stop to use the toilet and to get a coffee as i had been on the motorway for 4 hours already, i found the welcome in the cafe very rude, the lady behind the counter was very unpleasent and spoke to the customers like shit. everything was too much trouble for her as she was huffing and puffing and when i asked for a coffee i got the reply "MILK" but i feel sorry for the next poor soul that spoke to her. he asked if anyone was servicing on the food counter and she shouted in rage NO at the poor bugger, which scare the living shits out of my daughter. i don't think its exceptable when i am a paying customer. i know in future to avoid this services and use another, which i did on my way back which was welcome to receive my custom.
richard, Thu 30 Aug 2012
Dear Hannah, Thank you fopr your comments and apologies about the level of service you recieved. the service had become very busy today which we did not expect. We are ensurung we put on extra staff for the rest of the week and hope your next visit is more positive
General Manager, Tue 21 Aug 2012
To be fair, I seemed to arrive at a very busy time as I had to queue to both get into the car park and use the toilets. However, there didn't actually seem to be that many people using the restaurants but queuing time were awful. The tables were also littered with rubbish...obviously not enough staff clearing or serving customers! When I finally got to the till, the server really didn't seem to be paying attention to me, asking the same questions multiple times and after I'd ordered tea, asking if I wanted a hot drink!
Hannah, Mon 20 Aug 2012
SCAM - BEWARE - I recently picked up what I thought was a motorist in need of assistance, as he had an empty fuel can and wanted to get back to his vehicle. He took a call whilst in the car with me which convinced me his vehicle was going to be towed away at cost of £870, back to St. Austell. He then proceeded to say that he had no cash and only a broken credit card and so I foolishly agreed to fill up his can with diesel to get him off the motorway. He then pleased for some extra money to get back closer to home and again I foolishly agreed to give him £30 and left him at Membrey services where he was no doubt laughing his head off. Motto of this story - NEVER pick anyone up despite how desperate they may be. I am a fool bitten once so please learn from my mistake.
David Jones, Tue 7 Aug 2012
Totally agree with all the comments I have read. The place is a shambles and a shocking example to visitors of all that is wrong with our motorway eateries.Needs a complete rethink on every level. Food shocking, cleanliness far short of the expected standard, number of staff inadequate and management conspicuous by their absence!! Will go to great lengths and diversions to make sure I NEVER visit again. Also will inform others to do likewise.
Sian Andrews, Sun 24 Jun 2012
My sister and I had the misfortune of visiting the westbound Reading services today at about midday. It was a shambles. We decided to have 2 traditional breakfast at an extortionate price and then had to queue to get our tea at the Costa Coffe counter, by which time our breakfast was cold. I do not blame the staff on the Costa coffee counter as they were trying to make tea and coffee and charge for all the food being purchased. Next to this counter were 2 unmanned tills which could have been used for people to pay for other things apart from Costa products, which would have helped the situation no end. Eventually one of the Costa staff went to one of these tills which relieved the situation slightly. The same thing happend to us last year so they have obviously not learned anything. The whole place was a mess and people had to clear tables themselves. I know that it is difficult as they have no way of knowing how busy it will be but they really need to get some more staff. It won't bother me in the future as I wonh't be stopping there again, I will turn off the motorway and try to find a more organized and reasonable place to have breakfast.
Ceri Andrews, Fri 22 Jun 2012
I visit Reading services probably about twice a week. Just read about the lady scamming money 'for petrol'. I was subject to this scam yesterday by a lady with brown hair in a blue Vauxhall zafira with a young child in the car asking for money as she had forgotten her purse and cards and was on her way to London from Gloucester to visit sick relatives. She was very convincing and it seemed wholly like this was true. I initially was going to lend her the money and then thought how easily she could be scamming me. She too had an irish twang to her voice. Luckily I quickly decided to not give her anything and told her to try someone else - really glad I didnt now after reading this!

Just to say a few weeks after my visit, that as I expected no Money was sent to reimburse me for what was in retrospect an act of extreme naivety. Just to say in my defence the lady asking for fuel, as she had left here purse in doors, had two toddlers strapped in the back of her car. My faith in human nature is at an all time low.
Charlie@charliemagee.com, Fri 15 Jun 2012
Today I was having a sandwich at the fuel station waiting area, East bound. A lady in a white VW Golf pulled up next to me and asked if I would help her as she was low on fuel and had to get home, having left her bag with money and cards behind. She had two toddlers strapped into the back seat. She seamed initially very plausible so I decided to give her £10 of fuel at the pump. She said that when she returned home she would send me the money straight away. She asked for my name and address. the pump attendant rushed out and said "is this lady asking you to pay for her fuel". He said there had been lots of incidents of scams. I was a little shocked but felt as the lady was taking this accusation rather badly that I should make good on my promise. After walking in to the station to pay the cashers gave me a knowing look and said that it was very probably a scam. I returned to the lady in the VW and she took a piece of paper with my address details on it. As I was jotting them down I said rather clumsily how bad it is that people pray on the good will of other and she agreed but her initial rather posh home counties accent was slipping into a rather more Irishy twang. We will see. But remember if people are low on fuel you can ask at the station and they can telephone and take payment over the phone for fuel from family and fiends in an emergency.

Like Holly and Neil, I was scammed today by this same woman, aged around 30, dark hair, around 6 months pregnant and driving a red Ford KA. This time it was Tilehurst station car park so she is definitely doing the rounds so beware as I imagine service stations and station car parks will be a regular haunt for her. Sob story was that she had run out of petrol and had come out without her house keys and purse and desperately needed to get to work at Heathrow. I gave her £5 she must be raking it in!!
Sue, Thu 29 Mar 2012
Re. the comments from Neil and billy earlier this year, I was also approached by a woman in a red KA who had a sob story about having run out of petrol and having no money. She was pregnant too so I think it must be the same woman. She claimed this time she was trying to get back to Southend on sea. I lent her some money for petrol and obviously haven't had it paid back to me. Does anyone know if there is anyone we can report this to?I know I'm not going to get the money back, but I'd like her to get caught out so this doesn't happen to other people!
Holly, Sat 24 Mar 2012
I was just going through my old receipts and realised that I am still owed £6.50 by Reading services; I was served food and my money was taken just as the fire alarm went of and never actually got the food (as the building was evacuated. The manager took my details and promised to send a reimbursement. This has not been honoured.

Yes I too have been caught on the cameras at Reading service station. I stayed for 3 hours and then a couple of weeks later I received a letter from the company that managed the car park demanding £80. I didn't pay it. Then they sent another letter demanding £130. Then came some more letters. Finally came a letter saying that they MAY refer the case to their solicitor. Well that was 3 years ago. I haven't heard a peep out of them since. WHY? Well, that's because it's a private car park, operated by a private company. They have no legal right to issue a fine. All they can do is send you an invoice with a parking charge. Sure they can try to scare you into paying them a large sum of money. But actually the only way that they can make you pay it is to take you to a small claims court. They would have to provide evidence that would convince the judge that £80 was a reasonable sum of money to charge for 3 hours parking. They'd be laughed out of court!!! It's much easier to bully people into paying them with their scare tactics. Best thing you can do is to completely ignore their nonsense. Don't contact them whatsoever, or they will just hassel you even harder for the money. Do a search on the web and you will see that they are just opportunist bullies that make money out of people they put the frighteners on. Relax & Happy Driving!!
i know your game, Thu 1 Mar 2012
I wondered why when we stopped on the west bound services for some lunch that it seemed so quiet. After sampling your service it was not surprising. Staff did not understand English, food was half dished up and then they started cooking the chips so the food was rapidly cooling, it cooled even more while waiting for a cup of tea and waiting to pay, there was also the fact that the guy on Costa coffee(the only pay desk open) didn't know that tea should be served with milk!!! never again will I stop at this service station!

Same as Neil on 30 Jan 12, on Sun 12 Feb 12 my wife was approached by a well spoken young woman (mid 30's) claiming she'd dropped her parents off at the airport, had run out of petrol, was pregnant etc and could she help. When I approached and offered to get the police or help call her friends to assist she gave lots of excuses why this was not a good idea, scam scam scamMOTO should put up a warning about this sort of stuff, I will contact them direct
billy, Mon 13 Feb 2012
WARNING - I was approached by a woman who provided a sob story that after dropping her parents at the airport, had realised that she had left her purse at home and couldn't fill up with petrol. I let her borrow £20 and it has not been returned! She was driving a 56 plate red KA and claimed to be driving to Cardiff.

I chose to eat at EDC. Food was hot and served quickly. Will definitely stop by again.

Having paid £18 to park for the night in a rutted, badly lit and very distant lorry park, I got my gear together to head for a shower. Now all msa operators are bound to provide showers as part of their operating licence, but obviously hot water is an option which moto would rather not provide. I tried to contact the duty manager and the staff from EDC were most helpful, but not successful. So it was back to the cab and a wet wipe wash. Not good.

Having driven from west wales to Bassingbourn Herts on my return journey. I pull in at MOTO SERVICES for a sleep, having been on the road for over 8 hours I needed a break. After all the MOTO sign does say! Tiredness can Kill. Well Lady and Gentlemen be warned. If you pull in, as I did. And did not see the sign saying this is a private car park and you will be fined if you over stay your time limit! So much for MOTO Encouraging you to pull in. They will also fine you £50 £80 if you fail to pay within 14 days. So much for Health and Safety, Duty of Care etc. Drive when your knackered kill someone. You'll get locked up. Pull in at MOTO they will hold you up. Modern Day Dick Turpin.

I travel 40k miles per year. I often have used MOTONever will I spend more than a penny at any of their sites again.Recently I pulled into Reading Services feeling very tired. I stopped the car and slept, I then later continued on my journey.A little while later I received my parking fine. Blood boiling I returned to see how I had allowed myself to get caught.
Well it is pretty easy really. All the signs are outside of NORMAL eyeline. Proof of this is just look at every other sign trying to sell you something. Clear and in your face.
Well MOTO.... how short sighted are you??? No longer will you enjoy my money AND my colleague has forbidden any of his truck fleet buying your fuel.
Motorists beware of the motorway sign which reads "Tiredness can Kill" Should read, "MOTO RIP OFF"
MOTO Reading Eastbound..... but in to be fair applies to all services.. SO JUST BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THEY CAMERA ZAP YOU !!!

We often stop at this services to visit the M&S. Otherwise give it a miss. The 4 ladies toilets were 'out of order engineer called' not sure if the engineer is located on the moon, as the signs looked like they had been up for ages. Of the other loos all were either full of toilet paper, dirty or the locks did not work. 1 sink was out of order, another had a tap at right angles to the sink.
Good if you like costa coffee! The whole place is overtaken with 3 costa outlets including the 'mobile unit' outside. Shame no variety of coffee vendors, might explain the poor standards resulting in lack of competition.
Anonymous, Mon 31 Oct 2011
The toilets are smelly and i went to upper crust sandwiches and paid a forutne for two sandwiches that tasted like bleach or Milton's fluid or something, the foreign member of staff avoided eye contact so she didnt have to say thank you.
I have had the same service from the pasty cabin outside, in the past, also the pastys are filled with a smelly gunk that made my van smell for the entire rest of my journey. Appaling considering this is possibly the most expensive service station in the world
JG, Sat 29 Oct 2011
Called in the services on Monday afternoon stopped at the Costa Coffee counter and was disgusted to find that all the cakes and pastries had tiny pinhead insects crawling all over them, on complaining, I heard others complaining also, they just shrugged their shoulders and said there was nothing they could do, there was also a very long wait for people paying for meals because there was only one person on the counter. This was about 4pm so you can imagine what the wait would be on a busy time.Obviously I did not buy anything
Brownsword, Tue 27 Sep 2011
I arrived at this Services in the early hours of Friday morning for a coffee. The floor in the restaurant area was covered with old bits of food, there were, I think, 3 foreign staff supposedly working, they took no notice of me, I actually had to ask them several times to serve me, I was unable to find a clean table without any trays, plates or food on them, it was disgusting. If I was the manager of this restaurant then I would have sacked the staff on the spot. Appalling !

Myself and my husband had the misfortune of visiting these services. We were there early Sunday morning and in need of a good cooked breakfast. What can I say but it was the worst food I have ever had, everything including the coffee was cold. The sausages had more cerial in them than a bowl of cornflakes and the bacon had been scared by the grill. Tables and trays were dirty, if you could find a tray that is, but the staff that were there were too busy stocking up.Be warned avoid.
m andrews, Sun 7 Aug 2011
I had the misfortune to visit the eastbound services early on a Sunday morning. Apallingly dirty and gave up trying to converse with a rude and ignorant member of staff who obviosly thought that any cistomers at that time of the morning were not wanted. Filthy coffee machines and old food from the night before left lying around. Avoid at all costs.
Jimmy Dee, Mon 11 Jul 2011
By far the worst motorway service station I've ever been to.
R Callow, Mon 20 Jun 2011
Arrived at 2230hrs to get a Burger King to be told it was closed. I eventually got 'hot' food from Costa and then ten minutes later Burger King were serving food to other customers! After traveling for more than 12hrs from the south of France this was an utter joke. The reason for them to 'close' was that they were mopping the floor! Not impressed!
Steve Urwin, Sun 12 Jun 2011
Stopped here on Sunday evening 5 June. All the tables were dirty with food residue and packaging. Ordered fish and chips which were cooked to order and then had to queue to pay at the coffee counter because the tills were closed. So I had to wait whilst coffee was made to order for people in front of me as my meal got colder.
No vinegar or mayonnaise.
They attempted to overcharge us for my wife's sandwiches
I would never go there again
D Smallwood, Fri 10 Jun 2011
My wife and I stopped to have lunch at Reading services and chose to eat at EDC. The brunch was acceptable but the baked potato with cheese must have had an allergy to cheese as it didn't have much on it and the salad, I have bought more in a 50p bag of it in the supermarket. When we went to pay at the coffee counter we looked at the buns etc. for a dessert to have and most of it was moving, there was small flies all over the stock. When my wife questioned about the wild life additions and food standards we only got a shrug and a grunt off the young girl working there, I apologise but I couldn't even try to pronounce her name. I did point out that maybe they should throw all the buns etc away as they had been contaminated and all the young lady did was wave her hand over the buns to move the flies onto their next dessert. As we went to sit down there was a brief 'team' meeting held by the look of it behind the counter with someone that looked like a supervisor and he looked at the flies, called someone else over to look at them, waved their arms and moved onto to do something else. The same old flies, (sorry) buns were still on sale when we left 30 minute later.
Bob Cooper, Mon 18 Apr 2011
landed at gatwick air port a 10.30, picked up the car and headed towards Cardiff Wales in the early hours of the 6th,We had decided that as the flight was delayed and we were hungry the we stop for Burger KIng, It was closed. very disappointed !!
Saw cafe open thought we would have all day breakfast whitch looked nice!!, it was presented in minute portions, and tasted worse than the worse greasey spoon and looked like the cleaning lady cooked it and served it with an attatude. Why we we there!?
Costa coffee supplied be a very rude waitress at £2.99 a cup
After spending nearly £20 for a very poor meal, poor and rude service and dirty tables, just what you need after 10 hours travelling. NOT !!!

At 6.15 pm on Friday 25th March I and my wife arrived at the services to eat. The main food buffet was our prefernce, as in the past. The man staffing the buffet told us that the curry was "in the oven" and so wasn't available. He then informed us that the potato was also "in the oven"; the small amount of food left was dry and unapetising. My wife had some of the buffet food but was unable to finish the meal, it being too dried out. I went to the West Cornwall outlet. I bough a coffee at Costa, which was closed as my order was prepared. I looked around to see that the only coffee outlet in the buffet area was the main till at the end of the buffet; with a long que. The main problem apart from the poor quality food, was the shortage of staff. While we used the services, coach loads of people were arriving and we saw 14 coaches in the park. In summary, the sevices appeared to be reducing it's activites as the coaches from the large demonstrations were arriving. This is a business that needs to be looked at to provide better management to provide better service and to be able to respond to special opportunities like that on the 25th. We will not be using the services agin, we will go on to the next one.

Overpriced, and FREEZING cold. Overpricing is nothing new to MSAs but the automatic doors never seemed to close. Staff were friendly, so spare them a thought next time you visit the artic circle !(a.k.a Reading Services)

After driving from Peterborough to Thetford, Norfolk to pick my children up to take to Bristol for a few days the last thing I wanted was to spend the whole of my time on the M25 stuck in traffic. Two young children, no radio as broken and DSI battery are low. Thought I would stop at Reading services, now wish I hadn’t. It took longer to get a coffee from Costa than it did sitting on the M25 and that was over two hours, and £1.50 plus for a bag of hula hoops is day light robbery. Tables not cleaned, one person serving, no sandwiches, but at least the toilets were cleanish. Still after spending 6 months in Afghanistan I suppose I should be use to all this in ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Sir/MadamOn a resent visit to your Services Westbound. My Girlfriend was using the Ladies tolilet, and whilst in one of the cubicals. The lock on the door became jammed. She was locked in for awhile and was helped by a lady who had heard my Girlfriends cries for help! As there were no members of staff available. We wish never to use your services again.
Mr P Lemasurier, Tue 28 Dec 2010
Eastbound services, stayed overnight, tried to pay for the parking but the Ring Go service wouldn't accept the code that was displayed on the signs. Hence, I couldn't pay even though I tried, and got the parking charge. At least private parking charges are non-enforcable, and despite a couple of threatening-sounding letters nothing's come up - even in the unlikely event that this does go to court, I do have a recording of the phone call I made and of course my mobile phone records will prove that I rang up.

I know that Moto have an complaints process for anyone who feels they have had a poor experience on any one of there sites . If you or someone you know has been a customer and received poor service log onto the moto web site www.moto-way.com and get in touch with them. For future reference they also have a duty manager available who can deal with any customer concerns or queries before you leave site.

I recently visited with a friend for a coffee in the early hours of Sunday morning as I was worried about falling asleep at the wheel after a heavy night of mobile DJing. I didn't expect anything much to open but thought I could at least purchase a drink and have a rest. There was a small group of people sat down, the cafe appeared to be open but there was nobody there to serve or even to take payment for drinks from the beverage machine. After some deliberation I noticed someone standing at the front of the kitchen. I asked him whether anyone was serving and he gave me a rather vaccant "No" moments later he cooked himself some chips and disappeared! There was a lady who came in after us who made her own drink at one of the machines and was somehow served by a lady who came out of nowhere, she served the lady with the drink but immediately afterwards dissappeared and didn't even notice me! I called out firmly "Hello" several times but no one could hear me. We left with disappointment but noticed a coffee machine on the door on the way out, it was situated perfectly so anyone coming in wouldn't notice it, I guess presumably in the hope that people buy Costa coffee at a greater price. I think I will be stocking up on energy drink, windows down and loud music in the future! boy racer style.

I know that Moto have an appeals process for anyone who feels they shouldn't have received a parking notice. If you or someone you know has been a customer or fallen asleep and a parking notice has been issued, log onto the moto web site and get in touch with them. They also have a duty manager available who can deal with any customer concerns or queries before you leave site.

We had just arrived back in the country after a wonderful weekend in Helsinki attending our sons wedding having experienced impeccably clean streets, taxis and public loos.Within 25 minutes of landing in the UK we made the big mistake of stopping for a toilet break at the Reading services. The ladies toilets were the worst I have ever experienced, the floor was covered in wet toilet paper, the soap dispensers were all empty some of the taps didn't work and neither did the driers and it stank! If thats the first port of call for any first time visitor to this country- god help our tourist industry!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mrs Julie Goode, Tue 10 Aug 2010
In the interests of road safty we are told when tired take a break, you invite moterists to take a break. having purchaced food at your establishment i fell asleep in your parking area at 4 am. I slept untill 7am. Only to find you have fined me £80 because i exceeded your parking time. i can understand this at peak day times but at 4 in the morning your space was empty. this is a policy that will endanger lives as i will not take a break now to sleep for fear of recrimination. i shall inform the police and the AA of your ugly and draconian policy and will never stop at you services again.

These services just seem to get worse every time I go there. Certainly no better than last time. Car park and toilets were less than salubrious. I've seen some comments from people working at other service stations on this site stating that you can't keep facilities in tip-top condition every, day all year round. I admit that it depends on the company running it and how well or badly they manage the facilities. But I stopped at a very busy services in Austria in 2007 - Hohenems on the Swiss/Austrian border. It has space for several hundred cars and the cafeteria seats up to 500 people! This place was a paragon of cleanliness and efficiency. Bright modern buildings, clean toilets in the basement, which stops people building up and slowing things down in the restaurant/shop areas, with automatic entry doors, so you don't pick up germs from the handles after having washed your hands. A self service cafeteria and a waitress service restaurant. The cafeteria was pricey like any services, but no more so than in Britain. But unlike its counterparts in Blighty, it served superb food and drink. The seating area was spotless and regularly cleaned up while I was there (an hour in total). The company, Rosenberger, has about 10 service stations in Austria on some of the busiest motorways in Europe. Think of the commercial traffic criss crossing between Italy and Germany and all the tourist traffic, summer and winter. It's a commercial enterprise and is there to make money, but it's philosophy is in stark contrast to the faceless moguls which run British motorway services. They actually run a service station as it should be run, with clean, maintained facilities and good food. The customers keep returning, the profits keep rising. Every time I stop at Reading services, I wish it could be like the one I stopped at in Hohenems, Austria. Have a look at the website. It's in German only but it will give you an idea of what services could and should be like here. http://www.rosenberger.cc

Even though we were before the lunch time period (about 11:30 to 12:00) we had difficulty finding a clear table. Most tables had dirty crockery and the remains of food.
This is in marked contrast to the services at Leigh Delamere, which was clean even though it was the end of the lunch period.
Robin Trow, Thu 22 Apr 2010
Lovely coffee at Costa Coffee. We have just had a misfortune in that my dad has just in the last hour left his brown jacket with a camara in the pocket in the seating area just outside of Costa Coffee. So if anyone finds this please can you hand it into security. It is my mum's 70th birthday today so it has now put a bit of a dampner on everything. Many thanks. Karen

No playground or play area any more. Moto used to get my vote for being the most child-friendly of the operators, but at Reading they have grassed over the outside play area and inside the area has been removed completely. Boo hiss!

WARNING Petrol Scam. - Approached by a seemingly distressed young lady. (Blue 06 Ford Focus) Left her handbag at home and off to visit Grandmother in Hospital. Another Female and Baby in Vehicle. Gave them £10 cash for fuel and my details. Not heard from them since.
Somewhat annoyed! But that could have been a real situation and my wife and kids on their own. Came to the conclusion probably travellers! At least my conscience is clear!

Stopped for breakfast. Told to pay for breakfast and drink and they will bring the breakfast. While in drink queue breakfast was brought to me. drink was attained quickly and sat down to eat. I had falsly assumed that the delay in getting the breakfast was because it was being cooked. NOT TRUE. The beans were nicely hot the the rest was cold (and I mean cold). The rest of the service station was fine. Shame about the food.

I will never use any MOTO services again stopped here when I felt unwell had a coffee at the shop and took a tablet at 10.30am as I could not focus I closed my eyes, woke up hour and a half later feeling a bit better and went back home. only to receive a fine of £50 for being there for more than 2 hours, Mr WOGTEK from Moto said it’s not their fault as a private company control the parking and do not want to know.. I am a frequent traveler of Motorways and use Moto a lot BUT not anymore, and will tell all my employees and friends to do the same. It Will not end here!

Called @ M & S Simply Food. 8 checkouts 6 closed, queue right around the shop and two cashiers working their socks off to try and do their best. Another example of M & S taking their customers for granted.

Why was Reading east closed on 25 December? I have used it previously on 25 December. If a service arear is closed this should be indicated on the motorway prioir to reaching the previous area, because of the difficutlies which can be caused to people with health issues or young children who need to plan their stops. Also because breakes should be taken at regular intervals to avoid fatigue. The next stop for me would have been Soiuth Mimms on the M25 antoher 50/60 minutes drive. Because of an accident in that area we were unabel to reach there.
Gerald Matthews, Wed 31 Dec 2008
Don't bother trying to eat here. Go to the Marks and Sparks food concession and buy your sandwiches and snacks there. It costs slightly more than an M&S high street shop, but it's far cheaper than the service station 'restaurants', and, more to the point, the food will be ten times better!
M Jones, Sun 16 Nov 2008
East bound filling station. I waited about 5 minutes for diesel, as did the party in front of me, we both left before the pumps were armed, inside the shop chaos reigned, this is not the first time, Management seem to have a constant staff problem. I suppose I will be stopped from buying diesel here as the ANPR will have had my number plate.
Les Maytham, Fri 20 Jun 2008
I stopped in the services for a quick meal with my boyfriend and we were appalled to see that the cleaning lady was throwing plastic bottles into the same bag as ordinary rubbish. Sorry, but how many plastic bottles do you collect there every day?? And pray tell me, if it doesn't bother us ordinary people to keep them separate for recycling, just how hard is it for you to simply instruct your staff to use two different bags?? It takes NOTHING to make a difference!! Shame on you!!

On Weds 1/8/07 i parked my truck on reading west, went for a shower after paying £18 to find one of the 2 showers out og order, it has been for a long time. the manager told me he was waiting on parts to do the repairs, how long does it take in thia country to get a plumber to fix a shower? I waited and used the other one , it was disgusting,a health hazard as fungus is growing inside. i intend to report the situation to the relevant hygine authority.

We stopped at 10:45pm at a well lit and relatively welcoming site, hoping for a bite to eat and a warming drink. But no, all that was available was a cup, some warm water and a tea bag. Would wholeheartedly agree with previous comments about lack of English speakers, 4 people milling about but no-one able to answer a questrion about hot chocolate.

Me and my family visted your BURGER KING on this date and was greeted with poor service.I put in my order around 7pm i got two kids meals of burger, chips which came quick, but then i had to wait another 45mins for the kids meal of chicken strips, two cheese burgers, and onion rings. The young English lad who served me was very apologetic it wasnt any fault of his but the other members of staff, they were taking all the food for there own customers not allowing any for his.The food was not being cooked at the time leaving customers to wait a long time for there orders, there wasnt even alot of people around at the time. The members of staff were not too good with there English which made things more difficult, the poor English lad found them hard to understand and they seemed to be mocking him, which seems to me why he couldnt get his orders out.I spent around sixteen pounds for my food which i was very disappointed with.I think this sort of situation should be looked into, maybe more training skills are needed, and help those with speaking English.
