We stopped overnight on our way from Aberdeen to York. The whole experience was simply dreadful. It's pretty obvious that nobody cares how this place is run and it is a case of 'lets rip off the captive audience'. Fuel was Â£127.9 for diesel compared to Â£112.9 locally.At 5.15pm there was no lasagne in the Fresh Express (not that the staff seemed to care) so we had a choice of frozen fish and frozen chips which we declined. We ended up at the grubby, couldn't care less BK. Very very poor. Breakfast was the same rubbish and we just bought some fruit from M&S. Greggs and M&S were the exceptions to my comments above. If they can do it someone in a responsible position should be asking why the rest are not willing/capable of supplying a reasonable level of service.Alex

Terrible services. On way home to Scotland after a lovely visit to Lake District. But these services are shocking! Burger King staff took ages to serve people chatting to each other and running away from a wasp. Greggs staff good. Quick service. But expensive. Seating area dirty, lots of flies, tables dirty, Costa same experience as b.k girl ignored us standing waiting for about 5 mins while she spoke to her friend and we were only ones in cue, sugar area dirty hadn't been wiped for god knows how long. Will definitely bypass these services in the future.

Stopped today at your northbound Services. This must be the worst Services in the north, and god knows what foreign tourists might make of it: dirty, run-down, rip-off prices for food, reminiscent of somewhere from the 1970s which has never been updated or improved. Cumbria deserves better than this.

Stopped off at Southwaite services for a bite to eat before heading home to scotland and was disgusted with the service from the restaurant had to wait 15min to get serve as the staff just kept walking past when i finally got served i ordered fish and chips and when i got it the fish was small and crispy there was about 6 warmed up chips no side salad i was so disgusted i couldnt even complain to anyone as there was no one about that was in chargei think they really need to clean there act up and get people in who would take pride in there work and make sure the customers are looked after properly, dont think iwill be using these services until i know they've cleaned there act Up

Disgusting smell on both North and south bound people were on the verge of being sick! Flies, dried up food charged at extortionate prices! Under staffed (lady got all huffy and puffy when we ordered four meals and there was nobody around to help her, she was running the coffee bar as well as the hot food counter. I got pie chips peas and gravy......pie was rock hard, hardly any chips, stingey with the gravy......later on that evening I had a bad stomach! Cleanliness of the whole place is in desperate need of improvement. People have been complaining on here for a while and I think Daniel horsey need to act on this rather than respond with 'thank you for your feedback' comments!!! These services are dreadful and you need to sort them out!!!!!! I stop here a few times a year.....let's all choose another and boycott southwaite!!!

Sorry to say I was discussed with both the quality of the food and the lack of cleanliness.
Walking along the food counter the floor was sticky and felt as if it needed a good mopping.
The food selection was poor with only the roast chicken, sausages and what looked like a dried up lasagne. I decided to try the chicken with chips and beans (only 1 out of 4 advertised sauces,the bbq sauce, being available)while my wife had the fish with chips and salad. The chicken was barely warm although the skin looked as if it had been deep fried; the fish was a small portion and was mainly batter. The batter on the fish was a dark brown rather than golden and tasted as if it had been over cooked or refried. Finally the salad lettuce was old and going brown at the edges looking very unappealing.
The poor food quality together with the poor and lack of customer service made this a less than enjoyable visit. I will be seeking an alternative stop over in future.

Abysmal! The site is tatty, tired, broken down, not at all attractive or welcoming. Looks like a bomb site. The huge craters on the service road to the motel will take your wheel off. Total lack of care for the whole site & it's been like this for years. Place wants a complete overhaul to make it look like somewhere you might want to stop rather than drive on & wait for somewhere more visually appealing. There's even someone sleeping rough in an outbuilding. No wonder the sensible folk stick to Westmorland services on the M6.

Totally useless. i am frequent visitor to fill up at both Norht and South fuel stations. Went there to fill up and garage closed. Made avery nervous journey into Carlisle Tesco for fuel. As no card facility had to pay for this out of my own pocket. Disgraceful. Why have fuel cards for your garage anf not being open.

Stopped here a couple of times for a bite to eat in m&s on our travels south, excellent friendly service from the 2 girls who served me and even chatted with my young son which was lovely to see, very helpful also. Caught a glimpse of their names Kelly and Holly who made this a pleasant stop off :-) clean toilets were a bonus!

Stopped off at Southwaite around a month ago for a Gregg's breakfast deal and was greeted by two staff members i think went by the name of Scott and i think the other was Fez or Tez, but not entirely sure. After a long journey it was nice to be greeted with a smile and good manners these two lads were efficient with dealing with the cue and I would happily stop off at Gregg's again, well done!

Myself and my husband were in the servises this morning and i think i dropped my wedding ring in the ladies toilets,,,it was very busy and i had to navigate round a few old ladies to get out of the toilets and it wasent till i got outside that i realised i didnt have my ring,,,there was a toilet attendant in there at the time,,, i tried to telephone the number on the website but didnt get an answer,,, will keep trying to see if my ring has been handed in

I stopped at the Southwaite services this evening for a bite to eat and a coffee. Went straight to Costa but was instantly put off buying anything from there due to the number of flies over the food! I have raised the issue with Costa as well, but there must be something that can be done on site, especially as this seems to be a recurrent issue. Shy of this, I found the services to be of a good standard, the staff were all very friendly and chatty, which is definitely a good thing to perk you up on a night's drive!

Having stopped for fuel and rest north bound yesterday (31/8/14)i can only describe the experience as disgusting! Using the toilet facilities in the filling station is an experience i would not wish on anyone. The smell was foul, like portaloos at the end of a festival, floor wet with something! no soap and the hand dryer was out of order.May i suggest that the extra cost (profit) made on the fuel charges (i appreciate motorway charges are higher, but take off the mask!)be used on cleaners/cleaning products.

Have twice tried to stop off here - on Thursday and also in April - on our drives north to Edinburgh and both times due to poor signs we drove through. Please improve your signs for cars to allow a tired driver to refresh oneself. Have since checked on Google maps and it could have been so easy.

Visited the petrol station through the night on our way back home to London. What a great experience. Makes a change from some have visited. The man behind the counter could not do enough for me and my family. We had problem using the coffeee machine as it wasnt working quite as it should have. He couldnt do enough to help and we left thinking what good customer service. He showed me where the disabled toilets were and how to access the shop using electric eye on door. My husband commented on how helpful he was as we left to continue our journey.

Dear Mg, thank you for your feedback on here. Our Forecourt's along with all other major MSA's across the network are open 24hrs a day, 365 days a year. Like any shop or Forecourt which operates 24hrs, there is a short period at the end of each day where our stock and fuel is reconciled and an 'end of day' procedure is run. What a wonderful experience. I left my purse in the ladies toilet. Not expecting a good outcome I called the services contact number and left details.... 2 hours later I got a call and was told that my purse was here there, with everything still in it! Lovely people... my faith in humans is restored. Rock on Southwaites Services, I will always stop there when on that part of the M6. Blessed be to all those hardworking guys and gals.

As a regular user of the M6 I am familiar with many of its service stations.I have used Southwaite on many occasions and after today will never stop there again!The poor attitude of the staff at the costa counter was appalling. The number of flies around the costa food was disgraceful and this was not a one off as I was there Friday 25th July and there were as many flies then!I have been in other service station at 4am and have found a welcoming, chatty & friendly person serving me coffee yet today at midday there are 3 girls all of whom could barely look at the customer and when informed that the wrong drinks had been made was very rude! If you don't have the social skills to deal with the general public you shouldn't be working there. Manners cost nothing.

Visited the northbound service area on the way back up from a daytrip to Blackpool. Red warning light for fuel came on so i had to top up before continuing on my journey home up to scotland. When i filled up the prices for unleaded were nearly Ã‚Â£1.49 per litre. Im not a penny pinching scot but i would like to state that i for one wont be buying petrol for your site at these prics and will be recommending to friends that they bypass your site if they poss can. The argument about motorway service stations being historically expensive doesnt wash any more. A fuel tanker can get their quicker than it can to some in town petrol stations. The operators pay the same vat as everyone else. It must be down to greed then. On the motorway you have a captive audience for a lot of the time and i feel like a lot of others that its a rip off. This probably wont get published on your site but i feel i have a fair comment to make and had to voice it.

Stopped here on my way down to Manchester with two very tired and hungry children. I can only say how grateful I was for clean baby change and a good selection of food to feed my very fussy 3 year old. All the staff seem friendly even chatting to my son when they walked past. I do not normally comment on these service areas but I believe they get a lot of bad reviews and this stop off did the job. Two very happy children who fell asleep for rest of the journey down and one happy mum and dad :)

Dear Michelle White, I write further to your comments on here. Like the majority of U.K. Motorway Service areas, Southwaite operates an ANPR system where parking onsite is monitored. There are many many posts regarding parking both on this website and other forums including a variety of opinions on the subject. In essence and, for the majority of our travelling customers this set-up of short-term free parking is perfectly suitable. Where customers wish to park for a longer period, a parking charge applies. This is clearly signed around all parking areas as well as within the main building. Locally and more specific to Southwaite, the services is often used as an Ã¢Â€Â˜unofficialÃ¢Â€Â™ junction to access local villages and back-roads. Strictly speaking, the back access roads are primarily for Travelodge guests, Highways Agency and Emergency Services but, over time they are being more frequently used for local traffic. Where a PCN has been issued and the opinion is that it has been issued incorrectly, we would happily look at cancelling such PCN. In the main, such issues are rare and from circa 1.5m vehicle movements last year through Southwaite Services, there were only a handful of issues to review. This has got to be the worst place to stop on the whole motorway system. Filthy and unhygenic. The first impression I got was open topped bins being ravaged by the local wildlife. Rubbish strewn everywhere. The only saving grace was the toilets which were very clean. I would not really want to eat here if thats how they store the rubbish. What is happening behind the scenes where food is being prepared???. All in all a mess from start to finish. Management need to take a look at how they are running this site.

Well where do I start...we visited the northbound site which to say is a little run down. Anyway we thought we would treat our selfs to a costa,but christ what a mess cups, trays and rubbish nearly on everytable. Thinking god they most be busy; but the girls were just standing there taking about what it sounded like another member of staff. Order my coffee's and still the girls were taking to each other, which I thought was very rude. Then a older lady came over and started shouting at them about tea spoons which had be stolen from her department. I do not know where you get these rude,rubbish members of staff from, but I would be embarrassed if I the owner of this. What a shame. Only good thing what we enjoyed was the greggs lovely staff. Think costa needs to take a leaf out there customer service and there prices

I have been meaning to get round to writing a comment on here, I visited your services a couple of weeks back, so I decided to go for a coffee I entered Costa North to be diabolically disheartened by the rudeness of a girl named Courtney or Chelsea she looked me up and down and sniggered with another girl (whos name badge I didnt manage to get) so I took mine and my wife's coffee and decided to go to greggs, completley different environment I was served by a young lad who was full of life and seemed to be enjoying his job, I returned to my car then decided to be cheeky and go back for another pasty again the young lad was there but this time with a young lady called rose we had a right giggle about the weather and to tell you the truth the customer service was excellent, I popped in today and rose remembered me! Stopped off here yesterday on the north bound at lunch time. I went to costa where I was greeted by two friendly young girls who served me quickly and with a smile. This was lovely as you don't normally get this at a motoway service station.

I visited southwaite services twice over the weekend and on both occasions went into greggs.i find this a much more affordable option. On both occasions I received excellent customer service by a supervisor called Erica who greeted me with a smile and hello and served me quickly and efficiently. This is something I rarely come across these days and would just like to say what a great job she was doing at keeping the other staff in check also.very pleasent experience.

Asked him if sold car batteries but he said no. He asked us what was the problem and when told him he came to the car and pushed it so could start the car. He saved us having to phone for assistance. The previous disabled parking arrangement consisted of a number of parking bays accessed by driving through a narrow access road outside the main building entrance, within a pedestrian area where guests including families and small children would walk through, to and from the main car-park. Following a review of parking and pedestrian safety and after careful consideration, the decision was taken to make the immediate area at the front of the main-building Ã¢Â€Â˜car-freeÃ¢Â€Â™ and, to relocate disabled bays to a new dedicated area at the front of the main car-park with additional space to the side of each bays. This decision was for the safety of all our guests, the current disabled bays remain the closest parking areas to the main building. Regarding your comments of the disabled toilet being locked, each Moto site including Southwaite participates in the National Ã¢Â€Â˜radarÃ¢Â€Â™ key scheme. There are over 9,000 dedicated disabled toilets as part of this scheme throughout the U.K. Disabled guests often have their own key although, and as signed on the facility door, a key is kept within our WHSmith shop onsite. My disabled mother and I (I also had hurt my back and was in great pain at the time of visiting) visited on Saturday and we were very upset to find that we had a long distance to walk to get to the front door for a start due to the reconfigured disabled parking. Then to discover that the door to the disabled toilet is kept locked was a nightmare as neither of us can stand or walk for any time. As far as we're concerned this is discrimination of disabled people.

I visited Southwaite Services around midday on Fri 9 Aug, 2013. Stopped for a short break, toilet visit (wasn't the freshest i've been too but also not the worst). Then ordered takeout coffee to drink on the road. I ordered 2 iced mocha coffee coolers from the Costa Coffee Shop (1 of which was served in a normal takeaway cup as they had ran out of the clear plastic cups....not the greatest service standards). Halfway through drinking these, myself and my colleage found small shreds of plastic whilst drinking the iced coffee, upon further investigation there was a serious choking hazard in one of the drinks (3cm long cylindrical peice of broken plastic)which i have retained. I tweeded Costa directly at the time with images and details....nice of them to not bother replying, hopefully we will get some form of response and explanation from this method of feedback. I have been to this service station numerous times before and never had a negative experience, expected better standards from Southwaite and Costa. I look forward to your response

We stopped here heading down to Manchester and it was very busy. However we went to M & S and picked up some sandwiches and fruit that was good value for money and very fresh and also a cooler from Costa. Although busy the staff on Costa were fast efficient and also friendly. They were doing everything they could to keep the queues moving. We had a mini picnic outside and the children were able to run around and play. Also a nice patio area to sit on outside. Services get a lot of bad press and we wanted to say that we would use again

Also, today's staff in Greggs all need the sack they have burnt every hot thing on show, blonde girl did nothing but SNIGGER and WHISPER about every customer to here dark haired colleague with nasty spotty acne face and no Customer acknowledgement and politeness at all they were down right ignorant and rude and dis-respectful!!!! Never again shall I cross the threshold of Greggs at Southwaite... They are bringing the proud name of Greggs down!!!

Well, I stopped here today with family, yes it was busy, like bees round the honey pot but actually that's the same for any place this time of the year. The weather was hot and sunny, we walked over the bridge, the kids let off some steam in the play area, back to M&S for snacks and got a coffee for a caffine pickup, very pleasant.

My husband and I stopped at Southwaite services (southbound) at lunchtime yesterday. It was a most unpleasant experience, although the staff we encountered seemed to be doing their best to mitigate the problems. I appreciate that it was very hot and very busy, but the management should have anticipated the demand, this being a busy holiday weekend. Many, maybe as many as half, the toilet cubicles were out of action, which is unforgivable. Tables were not being cleared. The litter on the floor outside was disgusting. Even to have provided more litter bins would have been a start, but we saw no-one clearing tables or collecting litter. Maybe they were all trying to serve customers to reduce the queues. There was no sign of management staff helping to resolve the situation or to apologise to customers or providing support on the ground in any way for their other staff.
This is completely unacceptable. We, like many travellers had already had a long journey. This was no rest break at all, simply too stressful.
I would like to think that we never have to use a Moto service area again, but realistically, this will not be possible. Therefore I would be glad to have your explanation for this unacceptable situation and to hear how you plan to avoid it happening again.

ONLY 2 THE 3 GROUPS AHEAD OF US HAD BEEN SERVED. DELAYS WERE DUE TO STAFF LACKING ANY URGENCY AND INEFFICIENTLY HAVING TO RESOLVE MISTAKES IN ORDERS DELIVERED TO PREVIOUS CUSTOMERS. Hello Dosser, firstly my apologies for not coming back to you, itÃ¢Â€Â™s been a busy few weeks all round. You did ask for me to explain further and I shall do so as requested. As mentioned previously, at a site level we have very little control over fuel price at the pumps and, for a more detailed response; our Head Office would be able to explain further. However, over the years, we have tried a number of initiatives to both affect price and volumes sold, as you comment the most recent being a high-street price ppl trial. Like most independent fuel retailers, the actual retailer margin on fuel is continually being squeezed and is actually very little in comparison to the top-line price. I believe it is fairly well known that the majority of the price at the pump is generally made up from vat and associated tax. In the instance of our high-street price trial, volumes did not significantly increase enough to support a different price structure. The other problem is that a direct comparison to hypermarket price is not always realistic. Again, as previously explained and as you quite rightly comment in your last post, the Ã¢Â€Â˜big 4Ã¢Â€Â™ Supermarkets use fuel openly as a driver and often part-subsidise price in the knowledge that the additional footfall pays dividends elsewhere in their core trading activity i.e. grocery and non-food sales. Their fuel is also Ã¢Â€Â˜unbrandedÃ¢Â€Â™ and with independent supply channels they have much more jurisdiction and control. Your comment of arranging an agreement with BP collectively is an interesting one however, they have very little Ã¢Â€Â˜business interestsÃ¢Â€Â™ in our other activities, they only supply our fuel. Therefore and understandably any benefits from additional footfall due to fuel pricing would only be seen by us and therefore we would be expected to support this initiative solely. Granted they would be supplying more literage but again, potentially at a lower price so, the whole volume lift has to counter-balance this. A bit of a circle really. Interestingly during the trial, even taking into account our Forecourt shop sales, this is not support the pricing either. I do understand that pricing in general at MSAÃ¢Â€Â™s will always be a difficult and contentious issue and one that we continually try hard to review. You can now buy a cup of coffee for a Ã‚Â£1 at Moto Service Areas plus, we are rolling out Greggs at many of our sites including Southwaite, where amongst various cakes, pastries and sandwiches, you can buy a fresh sausage roll at 85p. MSAÃ¢Â€Â™s as a whole are expensive businesses to run, the vast majority of our customers use us for the basic intended purpose of short-term parking, using the toilet and travelling on and, do not transact with us. Older sites like Southwaite regularly need Ã¢Â€Â˜TLCÃ¢Â€Â™, weÃ¢Â€Â™ve just invested over Ã‚Â£100,000 in toilet and public area facilities over the past year and, we continue to do so. Newer MSAÃ¢Â€Â™s by their nature need less continued refurbishment but require the initial investment, WestmorlandÃ¢Â€Â™s latest MSA at Gloucester M5 will cost circa Ã‚Â£40m and ExtraÃ¢Â€Â™s latest MSA at Cobham M25 ended costing circa Ã‚Â£75m to construct. As a 24hr, 365 days a year business within the deemed terms of a MSA, many of our basic provided services are non-chargeable but come at a cost, unlike railway stations, shopping centres and airports, those operators have many units and outlets to pass service charges onto, we have to bare these costs directly. On the high-street, if businesses are not taking enough to cover their costs, they simply close during those hours.I do hope that this explains further and that you will see my response as genuine and sincere and, not necessarily a Ã¢Â€Âœcorporate responseÃ¢Â€Â. Hi Mgt at southwaite, you responded well to my complaint and appreciate that, but you have still not come back with the answer to what are the number of other reasons why your pricing structure is different to hypermarkets your words. I can only think it was now a corporate response, and you was just towing the company line, such a shame, also using the line the 4 big supermarkets use this has a driver to bring people in, is not possible to do something like that even though you are governed by the supplier surely with the amount of business you do with bp collectively a negotiation can be had to restore faith in your ever diminishing business

Dosser. Thank you for your comments on here. There is a full range of fuel including standard diesel and unleaded on the private Forecourt side. Some pump nozzles offer standard grade with other nozzles offering the BP Ultimate grade depending on the tank configuration under ground. The base of each pump is branded Ultimate fuels as is the standard on most BP Forecourts.Unfortunately, price at the pumps is one area that at a site level, we have very little direct control over. It is our policy however to ensure that prices are fair, displayed clearly and openly. Since your comment, I have taken the opportunity to ensure that the poll-sign at the entrance to the Forecourt plus the pumps are all displaying the ppl correctly, in which they are.Unlike the Supermarket Forecourts to which you refer, we are open and manned 24hrs per day, 365 days per year and, offer a variety of other facilities in which a normal high-street Supermarket or Forecourt would not necessarily offer. Apart from being a branded fuel offer in comparison to the Supermarket alternatives to which you refer, there are a number of other reasons to why our pricing structure is different to the hypermarket. It is also generally well-known and regarded that the 'big 4' Supermarkets use fuel pricing as a tool to capture trade for their main business that is grocery and non-food shopping.I do trust that this information helps put our process in perspective and explains our position. I stand corrected then but when i pulled up on the back pump and ssw it was ultimate i looked at the other pumps and on the bottom it showed ultimate implying to me that is all that was on offer, if you are correct i will withdraw my complaint from trading standards and consider myself corrected, in the end i gained anyway cause i was being lazy filling up at the services but decided to go else where saving my company a small fortune.Just out of interest why do you fill up there every day when two junctions up the road is a tesco that offer points on clubcard and is considerably cheaper

'Dosser' there is normal diesel on the front pumps and it is on the hgv side if you looked around you would off found it, on some of the pumps there is only a choice of ultimate diesel, ultimate unleaded and normal unleaded but on other pumps there is a choice i fill up here everyday on south and north, if you were confused you should of asked a member of staff and im sure they would of helped you.

Called at southwaite services for fuel south can't believe you can only get ultimate diesel on the car side, (don't know about wagon side) is this not one for trading standards or even watchdog surely something can be done about this why arnt we given the choice of normal diesel, i suspect there is more profit in it, also i think that moto feel we will pay that for fuel as we probably need it. well moto i got news for you didnt buy fuel drove down to penrith morrisons and took my trade there. 147.9 moto as opposed to morrisons 126.9. I visited the Northbound services. My intention was to go for a coffee some food and to use the restroom before resuming my journey. The signs to guide you in are not at all clear in fact they are very confusing. I could not find the car parking area and almost had to exit the services immediately without stopping. I decided to stop at the petrol pump, buy petrol and buy a coffee and sandwich "to go". Having filled my car with petrol I made my way into the shop and what a mess. There were cardboard boxes strewn all over the shop floor, I could not believe it. What a bad impression, in a place that is selling food. I went to the counter and asked for a coffee only to be told that I could not have one as the girl was not trained to prepare coffee. I left with no coffee, no food needing the toilet and very, very upset.
My advice to anyone driving north and looking for a stopover place is to drive past Southwaite and stop at Carlisle.

I was at the services as I had drive a long distance I stoped at greggs to get something to eat and drink I went into the restaurant and told I was have to get of my seat it's for edc customers only So I tuck my children and myself outside to stand in the rain and eat It made me and my kids uncomftorble I carnt believe I pay for food and u basically throw me out because its not from a certen restaurant then as I was leaving I thaught il stop to get some petrol I walked into the bp and the smell was awfull I go to get a drink of water to find the shelving had been taking apart in the drinks fridge all I could see was moody yellow gunk that smell reli bad I then see staff scraping it I think that is awful you treat your staff like that it should be professionally done by someone who no what they are doing anyway I got to take a picture and I will be sending to TRADING STANDARDS Moto must be the worst service station I have stoped at and will not be stopin in the future u have no respect for ur customers or the poor staff on that petrol station, lilly

We pulled in to Southwaite Services (northbound) so that my husband could 'Take a break' as he was desperate for a sleep. We followed the signs to the car park, but because of the double dashed white lines RIGHT ACROSS the turning into the car park my husband assumed that it was no entry and drove on. The next thing we knew we were at the exit and had no option but to go straight back onto the M6!! He was so angry that he didn't need a sleep any more. Please rectify the road markings and a sign for cars at the turning would be helpful too!

I have seen a couple of comments about the staff in marks and spencer and I've got to say i agree. I was walking from the north side to the south side and in front of me was 2 M&S workers exactly matching the description from mr & mrs Bennett's comment. They were both talking about a member of their staff saying 'is she pregnant? She has put on a lot of weight' for one as a customer I don't want to hear things like this and 2 it's unprofessional almost a sackable offence. I hope who ever they were talking about has found out and pushed it further. I'm a shop manager and would not tolerate this in my working environment.

We visited marks and spencers on this site on the 26th september. the shop was a mess and 2 members of staff, one had ahort blonde hair with glasses and the other quite small with mousy brown/blonde hair, were stacking green trays in such a manner that was loud and very inconsiderate in the fact they knocked several people. They were also using bad language, THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!! On the other hand we visited Costa and it was fab, fast service and clean.

I have to say, on my recent work trip to the Lake District I stopped off at Southwaite services and I was more than impressed with the service I received. The staff were so friendly and helpful to me during my coffee stop which I really appreciated given I was exceptionally tired from my long trip! The facilities at this station were immaculate also; very well kept, fresh smelling toilets. Very good experience all round!

OK... the price of fuel here will never be Tesco but... what a pleasant surprise and when needing to fill up on the motorway and lets face it we all know thats never going to be cheap, lower fuel prices. In comparison a few pence more expensive than supermarkets but still loads cheaper than others along the M6. Clean, tidy and modern north forecourt. Easy access and pleasant staff!! Decent allround.

Re Leslie PurcellPicking up a fine for overstaying the 2 hour limit is your own fault. All service areas and indeed alot of retail car parks have a 2 hour time limit, (including Tesco and McDonalds, to name a couple!), it is very clearly marked all over the car and truck park, what the charges and time limits are. If anyone is stupid enough to not check the parking rules first, then quite frankly, they deserve to be fined or clamped!

RE: Leslie Purcell - most service stations charge for parking, this should be checked beforehand. If you stopped at any service station for a long period of time and didn't check the parking charges this was likely to happen. Believe me I know, I worked in one for 3 years!

having done a full days work multi dropping in belfast i NEEDED a rest on the drive back down to coventry from cairnryan, i stopped at this service area at about 1 AM for a sleep, i stayed there for 3 hours and ended up with a Ã‚Â£50 fine.its not as if it was busy and they needed the car park spaces as the parking area was nearly empty. never again will i stop there for a break,southwaite services i hope your pleased with yourselves.

Anonymous Coward- I understand what you are saying but it is obvious that between the times of 12 and 2 most food places are busy therefore i think breaks should have been taken before or after the busy period. If they were really desperate for a cigarette im sure there are places staff members can smoke without customers seeing them.

visited this site on Friday 6th April. it was aroud half 1 and very busy, 3 members of staff from marks and spencers were outside the front doors having a cigarette. For one it was very busy in M&S and they should have been on the shop floor and 2 i am a regular customer in M&S and think the staff should not be outside the front door smoking as it does not reflect well on the company. My husband and I also noticed the foul stench of urine, greasy floors and mouldy damp ceilings. southwaite needs to sort it out!!!

Watch out when filling up here-I went in today-unleaded 131.9 so I went to a pump-one of the fronmt ones and starting filling up with what I thoght was normal unleaded until I noticed I was being charged 138.9!!! I went in to question this and was told I was getting ultimate unleaded!! I checked the pumps and the clever trick they have to con motorists is the front pumps are each 2 diesel and 1 unleaded hose and the back pumps are the only place to get normal unleaded-so sneaky I wont be back!!!

OMG. Stopped at Southwaite today to fill up with unleaded after seeing 129.9p on the sign on the M6. Thought it must have been a mistake so decided to pull in to check it out and..... it was actually right!! The fuel is cheaper than the Tesco nearby!!

While travelling down south from Scotland my wife and I had the misfortune to stop for breakfast at Southwaite services and were disappointed in the extreme at the total lack of customer service when we were charged Ã‚Â£17.98 for two stone cold breakfasts that looked nothing like they did in the menu and two look warm coffee's all served by staff that really couldn't have cared less.I think that if you are charging these inflated prices then a bit of civility wouldn't go a miss.Next time we travel down the M6 we will be eating elsewhere as quite frankly I wouldn't serve your food to pigs.

After a long trip to Edinburgh we had stopped for a short break @ Southwaite to have tea with my family and feed my 9 month old baby. I was very disppointed with the standard of food and poor service from Burger King. Also the cleanliness of the eating area was very poor. No tables had been wiped, and there was mess all over the floor. Despite having plenty of staff most seemed to be chatting and the lack of supervisory staff clearly had an impact. I must compliment the staff in Costa Coffee as standards were very high and the staff were very helpful.

I am a visitor to a lot of the motoway service stations nationwide. i am very dissapointed with the services of the managment team at this service station on the north bound services.I last visited these services on 29th August 2011 and had a problem.The retail manager Mr. David Finnerly delt with the problem ......so i thought.I am owed a sum of Ã‚Â£58.00 from the service station and still waiting for the cheque.I was also given Mr. Stuart McKerr as the site support manager as a back up if David was unavailable. I was given the phone number 016974 74700.I have phoned 5 times and left a message for one of the above to phone me back with a response to when will i get the money owed????Todate......no phone call and no cheque........So what is going to happen now?????

This is seriously THE worst service station we have ever visited. On Sunday, after a very long drive back from Ireland, we decided to break the journey up and take a well-earned rest with husband and three children. We deliberated on what to eat and after observing the dried up display of hot food on offer we opted for a KFC dinner instead. Bad choice. My children had a chicken nugget child's meal, I had a Whopper and hubby had a Whopper meal. All totalling a whopping Ã‚Â£25!!! They had no toys for the kids and they didn't even offer an icecream or anything for them. Their 'chicken' was hardly visible (more batter than meat) and was as dry as a board. Chips were tasteless and dry. My burger was very mediocre and my husband ended up leaving his burger after a couple of bites as he said it had no taste and was pretty awful.
Even the Costa coffee, which surely they can't get wrong, was foul. I ordered an Americano and was going to add my own milk when the man serving poured a huge amount of milk in which only ruined it. I was too tired to ask him to redo it as it had taken an age to get at this stage! It was a bitter tasting coffee yet far too milky for my liking.
The place was FULL of flies at every turn! In the toilets, whilst eating, at the counters... we even sat outside to get away and wasn't bothered by them out there!
Staff were disinterested and not very friendly whilst serving us. Even the magazines which I went to purchase had the free gifts stolen from each of them!!! Absolutely the pits of a service station.

This service station was truly awful and was a reminder as to how bad service stations were 20 years ago. The concept of multiple retailers under one roof is excellent WHEN the building is appropriate. In this case it is not, and the reality is that the old original building should have been flattened prior to a conversion to this concept. There was very little space and the facilities offered by the vendors were showing their age. At one there was NO hot water, hence no Tea available which was only became apparant after standing in line for some 10 minutes. At another (Costa) there were only paper cups as their dishwasher was broken! This place should be avoided at all costs unless you are someone who appreciates a third world experience!

Just visited these services for a quick bite to eat before carrying on with our journey. I ordered a cheese & ham toastie. It took a while to cook & then when I received it, it was burnt! Then I get to the till to pay with my money ready to only find out she is going to charge me more! I feel ripped off!

Moto Heather, at least now you are telling them to contact Moto customer services,(I suspect all you will do is train your customer service team to say there is an appeals procedure as you did,I may be wrong) does that mean going foward you will offer this advise to all who comment on this web site about parking and other related comments about Moto? would be a nice idea to supply a telephone number for them to ring Moto customer service direct(as a service)Looking forward to seeing a positive responses from yourself on these matters. Seeing as though you do have rather a lot of input on this site i would say regular, why dont you take these comments as you know thier most about parking and reasure the British driving public that you will enlighten your boss to the growing unrest to moto system of charging and the damage to your reputation unless they don't care. Surely just because this is an independent site does not mean you can't assist, i am sure the host of this web site would welcome your positive and reactionary service to its readers. Come on stop hiding behind excuses.

I would just like to say that my wife and i were ripped off at this service station what with 2 sandwich packs and 2 teas costing over Ã‚Â£10-00 .I would like to say to any other people that visit rip-off southwaite and choke on their sandwiches and then spit the offending stuff out of your mouth at least you do not need to bin the remains of the food as the rats i saw on the grass outside the main entrance adjacent to the last disabled parking bay would finish them off, [legally parked in the disabled bay].Have a really super duper day at southwaite services am off to get in touch with their local council about the rat problem but just before i go i did tell the 2 lady staff members about what we saw, and also, why was there freezing air blowing out of vents next to the toilets , the whole place was freezing , the 2 staff ladies said it was warmer earlier !!!!!

Note to Heather: your advice is impractical. You get this Parking Notice through the post AFTER you have left the site since it goes to your home address identified by your registration. MOTO should be ashamed of itself not trying to cause already tired customers distress and inconvenience - MOTO should not be attempting to justify the unjustifiable - they should call a halt immediately to what is simply an attempt at extortion.

I have just received a notice to pay a parking penalty for over 2 hours on 26th August 2010. It claims to have photographic evidence of PARKING - in fact it has photographic evidence of coming onto the site and leaving the site - no images of me parked at all - this is because the first photo shows me coming onto the site to buy a paper - the image of me leaving the site was my second visit in the same day and shows me leaving the service station to go to Carlisle. This is NOT evidence of parking and cannot be since I only parked for the time it took me to pop into the shop. I WAS VERY UPSET BY THIS AND DISGUSTED. I have spent almost two hours on this so far - trying to get in touch with someone - no one answers the phone on a Saturday when I received it - so I have spent the weekend in distress - and I have written to my MP (Rory Stewart) to complain of this abuse of a monopoly - it is a health and safety issue - and MOTO are supposed to provide customers with a place to safely sleep - they even have the THINK logo on their website - yet they are obviously trying to charge people to do this - plain greed and disgraceful. I have written to MOTO PR and am not going to use MOTO again unless I get a letter of apology and an assurance that this parking system will be halted immediately so that there is no danger of lives being lost due to people like me refusing to stop at a MOTO due to their ludicrous policy of charging for parking. The last entry that says you can speak to the manager has obviously never tried to speak to a manager on a Saturday. I suggest all people who have been charged and paid on this evidence get their money back - it is not evidence. I also suggest you complain to your MP too.
I know that Moto have an appeals process for anyone who feels they shouldn't have received a parking notice. If you or someone you know has been a customer or fallen asleep and a parking notice has been issued, log onto the moto web site and get in touch with them. They also have a duty manager available who can deal with any customer concerns or queries before you leave site.

I've just received a penalty for parking for 2 hours and 47 minutes at 3.51 am. I had to park up because I was too tired and it was dangerous to drive any further. I'm not impressed and I'm not paying it.

Stayed at the Travelodge on the southbound side of the motorway, reasonable stay there no problems. I visited the Moto services for food and drink. Went to the EDC (Eat & Drink Company) for an evening meal. Not a great deal of choice and fairly uninspiring but I got Fish, Chips and Mushy Peas. It was approx 6.30pm and there were two staff on at EDC. I waited near the serving area for about 5 minutes before someone spotted me and came to serve me. If it hadn't have been for food on the hotplate I wouldn't have even been sure it was open. The other staff member was serving coffee to some other customers and there was no one on the tills. I paid for my meal at the coffee counter when the other customers had been served. Food was actually quite good. Nice large piece of fish with crispy golden batter, chips and mushy peas. Price was Ã‚Â£5.99 (reasonable). Also bought a bottle of Liptons Lemon Tea (Ã‚Â£1.99 - overpriced!). Total cost Ã‚Â£7.98)
Went to the Marks and Spencers for breakfast to eat in my room before leaving. Ham & Egg Sandwich (Ã‚Â£2.70), Fresh Orange Juice (Ã‚Â£1.35), Milk (0.45). Total cost Ã‚Â£4.50. Service was pretty good in the M&S. Got served quickly and friendly service.
Conclusion, Food prices were fairly reasonable which was a surprise but drink prices are very extremely overpriced. If you are travelling with a family or group then it can all mount up. Bottled water and carbonated drinks are a ridiculously priced. It's natural that people are mainly going to be stopping for a drink and it's natural that when most people eat they'll need a drink. So I guess that is why the drinks are expensive.
These motorway services are not very inspiring. I found the self service part (EDC) to be the least helpful/willing to serve. The other individual shops, M&S and WHS were fine.

Stppoed on the way back from a football match in Carlisle. Girl serving food was to the the point of being aggresive. Not sure what time they stop serving food, but we were there at 22:30 and food was on the hotplate. The assitant refused point blank to prepare any fresh chips, but we were expected to pay full price for a pie. Ã‚Â£4.99 no chips, disgusting. Have contacted MOTO but do not expect a reply.

I stop here all the time on the way back from Scotland as i use it as a half way mark from home. My daughter and i stopped off on Bank Holiday Monday and because the weather was lovely i agreed to let my daughter play on the park while grabbing food on the way around. However there is no park there it has now been taken over by tables and chairs with giant umbrellas, Any parent knows that a child needs to let of steam when they have been couped up in a car for hours on end. This is no longer possible and the only place for a child to run is inside where people are carrying hot food/drinks, not a good idea. As for Burger King, i have found that the staff can be quite rude, only half of the menu seems to be available and is over priced and generally quite cold by the time you are ready to eat it. I have stopped on one occasion and they had a stero on really loud and it stayed that way whilst i and another customer was being served. Someone from the back turned it down and the girl that was serving me stopped and went to turn it back up again. Have a word please this is not acceptable.
However on a positive note, the toilets are always clean, and the shop staff are friendly.

visited this evening around 20.00 broken glass and debris spread all over car park obviously never gets cleaned, bins full and overflowing onto ground. Entrance to and from motorway potholes broken surface, clearly no management on this site, disgusting!!
